Springfield Mummers on Parade Tour to Begin at Thunderbirds Game

March 8, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Thunderbirds News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Springfield Thunderbirds are proud to be the hosts for the first stop on the 2018 Mummers on Parade Tour, featuring the Aqua String Band and the Holyoke Caledonian Pipe Band, on Friday, March 16 inside the MassMutual Center at 6:00 p.m. ET. They will be the feature guests for the MGM Springfield Pregame Concert Series before the Thunderbirds host the Syracuse Crunch.

For the first time since they began their annual pilgrimage to the Pioneer Valley, the two groups - each a favorite of parade goers from Springfield and Holyoke alike - will have a new "first stop" for their Mummers on Parade Tour at the Thunderbirds game as part of the Pregame Concert Series. Unlike prior Concert Series performances, the Aqua String Band and Holyoke Caledonian Pipe band will be marching throughout the concourse to bring a taste of the St. Patrick's Day Parade into the MassMutual Center. After their march through the concourse from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m., the two groups will also hold a joint performance in the MassMutual Center seating bowl prior to the start of the Thunderbirds game.

The Aqua String Band is an all volunteer string band, best known for their participation in Philadelphia's annual Mummers Parade. Since its inception in 1920, the Aqua String Band - dressed in their eccentric theme-based costumes - has entertained millions of viewers, parade goers, and concert attendees in Philadelphia, as well as annually in the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Organized in 1909, the Holyoke Caledonian Pipe Band made its first appearance in Holyoke's 1910 Fourth of July parade. Since the pipe band first appeared in 1910, it has delighted generation after generation of New England inhabitants with stirring strains of the "great Highland bagpipe."

From the MassMutual Center, the Aqua String Band and Holyoke Caledonian Pipe Band will also hold performances at The Student Prince (7:00 p.m.), Uno Pizzeria & Grill (8:00 p.m.), Theodore's (9:00 p.m.) and Plan B Burger Bar (10:00 p.m.) to round out their Friday night tour on the eve of the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Fans can ensure this place for a most unique performance.
