Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Pawtucket spot-starter starter Jess Todd tossed five scoreless innings in just his second start in seven years and the PawSox jumped on two Indianapolis relievers early en route to a 6-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series on Monday night in front of 6,029 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Todd (1-0) allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out six. He threw 84 pitches in his longest outing of the season. Luke Montz's two-run double highlighted a three-run rally in the third that gave Pawtucket the lead for good, while Sean Coyle ripped a two-run double one inning later.
Indianapolis spot-starter Charlie Leesman lasted just one inning and was replaced by veteran Adam Miller (0-1). After Miller pitched a scoreless second inning and retired the first two batters in the third, Jemile Weeks reached on a controversial infield hit to begin a big rally.
Quintin Berry followed with a walk, then Bryce Brentz grounded an RBI single off the pitcher Miller that scored Weeks from second base to open the scoring. Montz followed with his two-run double off the warning track in left-center to make the score 3-0.
Brad Lincoln entered for Indianapolis in the fourth and walked Deven Marrero and and Garin Cecchini to begin the frame. One out later Coyle lined a ball off the left field fence to plate a pair of runs. Lincoln later allowed an RBI double to Marrero in the fifth.
Miguel Celestino pitched two scoreless relief innings behind Todd, while Robbie Ross, Jr. made his PawSox debut in the eighth and allowed a run on Alen Hanson's triple and Gustavo Nunez's RBI groundout. Ross stranded a pair of runners in the ninth to end the game.
Marrero (2-for-2, 2 walks, RBI) and Brentz (2-for-5, 2 runs, RBI) each had a pair of Pawtucket's seven hits. Hanson had two of Indianapolis' five total hits.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night with first pitch at 7:05pm. Right-hander Keith Couch (1-4, 6.23) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Indians counter with righty Adrian Sampson (2-3, 2.80).
