Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Gwinnett Braves, 5-2, Friday night at Coolray Field. The Chiefs used a three-run sixth inning and strong pitching performance from Scott McGregor to guide them to the series-opening win.
McGregor put together his second straight quality start, allowing just one run on six hits in six and two-thirds. He struck out four Braves and walked two.
Syracuse (13-18) took an early lead in the second inning. With one out, Dan Butler walked and Josh Johnson singled off Braves starter Chien-Ming Wang. After a force out, Matt den Dekker slashed a double down the right-field line, driving home Johnson to give the Chiefs the lead.
The Chiefs broke the game open in the sixth. Emmanuel Burriss reached on a bunt single with one out, extending his on-base streak to a Syracuse season-high 14 games. Ian Stewart lined a single off the glove of first baseman Matt Kennelly, advancing Burriss to third, before Jason Martinson walked to load the bases against Wang. Kila Ka'aihue followed with a first-pitch single to right field, scoring Burriss for a 2-0 lead. Dan Butler, the next batter, then lashed a two-run single to left field for a 4-0 Syracuse advantage.
Gwinnett (15-16) finally got on the board in the seventh against McGregor. Jose Peraza singled in Mycal Jones for the Braves' first run. Mitch Lively, however, relieved McGregor with two runners on and induced an inning-ending groundout from Adonis Garcia.
Burriss helped the Chiefs added a fifth run in the next half-inning. He walked against Juan Jaime to start the frame, stole second, reached third on a lineout, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Braves mounted a small rally in the ninth. Rafael Martin surrendered a triple to Jones to start the frame. Two batters later, Eury Perez singled to cut the lead to three. With the tying run at the plate, Martin retired the next three batters in order to close out the win.
Syracuse and Gwinnett are back in action Tuesday night at 6:35. Bruce Billings is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite Sugar Ray Marimon for the Braves.
