Tides Hit Early, often, Cruise to Win
May 11, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk used a six-run first inning and a strong outing from Tyler Wilson to roll past the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 6-2 Monday night at Harbor Park.
After a three-game series sweep of Buffalo in which Norfolk scored six total runs, the Tides wasted no time in jumping on Scranton starter Bryan Mitchell (2-3). The Tides scored six runs on seven hits and sent ten men to the plate in the first frame, chasing Mitchell after he recorded just one out.
Norfolk collected five singles in the first inning, while Rey Navarro added an RBI triple and Christian Walker registered an RBI double. Walker also doubled later in the contest and has now hit safely in seven consecutive games, matching a Tides season-high.
The six-run first snapped a string of 21 consecutive games in which the Tides had failed to score more than four runs in a contest. The six runs and seven hits in the frame were also both season-highs for the Norfolk offense.
Tyler Wilson (2-4) was the beneficiary of the early offensive output, although the 25-year-old UVA product didn't need much help. Wilson allowed two runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings, striking out three while issuing one walk. It was the fourth Quality Start of the season for Wilson, who now owns a 3.43 ERA through seven starts this season.
With the win, Norfolk has now won a season-high five consecutive games. The Tides (18-13) also pulled within a half-game of Durham for first place in the IL South division.
The two clubs continue their three-game series Tuesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 6:35. Mike Wright (3-0, 2.64) takes the hill for Norfolk against left-hander Chris Capuano (0-1, 1.93), who is making a Major League rehab assignment.
Tuesday is Country Night at Harbor Park, as the Tides welcome Sean Fuller, drummer for Florida Georgia Line, presented by the Eagles' Nest Rockin' Country Bar and 97.3 The Eagle. There will also be a pre-game high school contest featuring Churchland vs. Wilson, with gates opening at 2:30 pm.
Notes: Earlier Monday, Norfolk activated RHP Jorge Rondon after he was optioned from Baltimore following a waiver claim from Colorado on Sunday. To make room for Rondon, the Tides transferred infielder Sharlon Schoop to Double-A Bowie... Chris Parmelee had two singles in the contest to raise his average to .345, and he's now reached base safely in 17 straight games...Norfolk's six runs were scored by the first six batters in the first inning...Julio Borbon had a single, walk, sacrifice fly and stolen base and has now reached base safely in 24 consecutive home games dating back to last season...Patrick McCoy struck out four in 1.2 shutout innings of relief to lower his season ERA to 1.93.
