Spokane Storms Back Late to Salvage Point in Shootout Loss

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs dropped the front end of a pair of back-to-back home games as they fell to the visiting Kelowna Rockets on Friday night 4-3 in a shootout.

The Rockets got on the board first with a goal from Leif Mattson, his 21st of the season, at 5:26. The Chiefs answered at 7:32, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity when Eli Zummack sent a pass through the crease to set up a one-timer for Riley Woods, who tied things at 1-1.

A quartet of second-period penalties resulted in Kelowna spending a significant portion of the frame with a man advantage as they converted twice in the period to extend their lead to 3-1 heading into the second intermission.

Following a Luke Toporowski goal on a deflection at 14:36, Spokane appeared headed toward a 3-2 loss in regulation, but the Chiefs managed to tie things up with a Luc Smith goal with just 27 seconds remaining. Woods sent a puck into traffic with the goalie pulled and Smith was able to get the rebound past Idaho native James Porter in goal.

A scoreless five-minute overtime sent things to a shootout. The Rockets connected on each of their first two shootout attempts, with Nolan Foote's score sealing the loss.

Bailey Brkin was 27-for-30 in the net for Spokane while Porter ended the night 40-for-43. The Chiefs went 2-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.

The Chiefs take on the Tri-City Americans Saturday, February 23 for Chiefs Fight Cancer Night! The Chiefs players will be wearing special edition jerseys featuring player nicknames. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on the game-worn jerseys the player will be wearing during the game, with proceeds benefiting Every Woman Can. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will also receive a rally towel modeled after the Chiefs Fight Cancer jerseys.

Any fan with a ticket to the night's game will be eligible to attend the Spokane law enforcement vs. Tri-City law enforcement hockey game set to take place prior to the Chiefs' game, with puck drop coming at 5 p.m.. Doors will open at 4 p.m.
