PREVIOUS GAME - Winterhawks 2 at Americans 4: The Portland Winterhawks wrap up their regular season slate against Tri-City with a 4-2 loss to the Americans on the road.
The two teams traded blows in the first period as Jared Freadrich and Cody Glass scored for the Hawks within a 1:07 window, but Tri-City found a way to regain a lead through two periods.
Late in the middle frame, Samuel Huo scored from a low shot on the left wing post to give the Americans a 3-2 lead heading into the intermission. Coming out for the third period, Joachim Blichfeld was given his first penalty shot of the season, but Beck Warm made the save to keep the home team on top by one goal.
Warm and the American withheld the Hawks' late push and turned aside the last 20 shots of the night. A late empty net goal sealed the victory as Tri-City improves to 7-1-0-0 head-to-head against the Hawks.
NOTABLES:
Joachim Blichfeld extends his point streak to five games with an assist tonight.
Jared Freadrich quietly racked up a four game point streak (2G-3A), while Cody Glass has points in nine of his last ten games, gathering his second goal of the month.
Since Joel Hofer stopped over 25 shots, you can take advantage of the Papa John's 30% discount using the promo code SAVES25 at your locally owned PapaJohns.com all day today (Saturday).
TODAY'S MATCH-UP:
The Seattle Thunderbirds showed resilience last night and powered back to beat the Everett Silvertips 3-2 in overtime on the road. Andrej Kukuca (G-A) tied the game midway through the third period and Jarret Tyszka (G-A) netted the game winner in overtime. Noah Philp (2A) and Matthew Wedman (2A) also added a couple of assists in the victory.
Seattle's top two scorers each have a sustained point streak in February. Wedman enters tonight's match-up with a nine game point streak (9G-7A) and Noah Philp has points in eight straight.
Roddy Ross was stellar yet again in the Friday night win, stopping 39 of 41 shots, including 16 in the third period and overtime. Should Ross start back-to-back games this weekend, it will be the former Rookie of the Month's first start against Portland.
In the last head-to-head meeting, the Hawks beat Seattle 5-2 with the help of a Blichfeld hat trick and ultimately clinched a spot in the WHL playoffs. The Hawks top scoring line this year combined for nine points in the blowout home win.
The Hawks are 7-2-0-0 against the T-Birds this season with the pair of losses both coming in the fall at the ShoWare Center. After Saturday night, the rivalry will be renewed for a home-and-home weekend series to close the regular season.
The Hawks next home game is coming up on Friday. March 1 against the Spokane Chiefs at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It's also the Smash For Cash promotion presented by Jack in the Box where one fan will go home with $1,000 cash. Please visit winterhawks.com/tickets for full details on pricing and availability.
