Spokane Stifles Seattle in 4-1 Win

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs picked up their second-straight victory on Tuesday night, coming out on top 4-1 in a physical matchup with the division rival Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Chiefs got the scoring started just 2:43 into regulation when Luke Toporowski found linemate Eli Zummack streaking to the net from the left wing. Toporowski had just exited the penalty box after an early interference penalty, making amends in picking up his 12th assist of the year as Zummack finished the score on his backhand.

Seattle evened things up on a breakaway from rookie Conner Roulette midway through the period but Spokane answered right back, retaking the lead at 16:26 when defenseman Bobby Russell threaded a point shot through traffic for his sixth of the year.

Spokane added to their lead on the first shift of the second period as Jack Finley created a rebound chance for defenseman Noah King to clean up, potting his third goal -- and second in five games -- to make it a 3-1 contest.

Reigning WHL Rookie of the Month Bear Hughes added insurance on a Spokane power play in the third period to make it 4-1 Chiefs. The goal pushed him into a tie for the most goals by a WHL rookie this season with 11.

Chiefs netminder Lukas Parik made several spectacular saves throughout the game, stopping 33-of-34 overall. Seattle's Roddy Ross was 37-for-41. After not seeing a power play in either of their past two games, the Chiefs scored twice on seven chances on Tuesday. The Thunderbirds were held o-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Chiefs are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Spokane Arena. It will be the annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by The Spokesman-Review Christmas Bureau. Fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to throw onto the ice after the Chiefs score their first goal. All donated toys are delivered to The Spokesman-Review Christmas Bureau to be distributed to families in need in the Spokane community.
