Latimer Lights the Lamp in WHL Debut to Help Oil Kings Drop Warriors

Carson Latimer had the WHL debut that dreams are made of.

The 16-year-old, Surrey, BC native scored his first career WHL goal on his first shot during his first shift and helped the Edmonton Oil Kings (18-6-4-2) earn a 3-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors (9-13-1-0) in front of 3,967 fans at Rogers Place on Tuesday night.

Latimer's effort on the goal was nothing to sneeze at either, as he drove hard to the net and propelled the puck past Warriors netminder Adam Evanoff with just one hand on his stick to get on the board just 3:05 into his major junior career.

The win was the third straight for the surging Oil Kings, who have hit their stride since returning from their five-game, ten-day BC road trip.

Also hitting his stride, Sebastian Cossa (10-2-0-1) moved into double-digit wins on the season by turning aside all but one of 25 shots against on the night. His positioning, focus, and ability to stay sharp during extended periods of time without facing shots not only helped the team collect another two points, but awarded Cossa Third Star honours.

Evanoff (3-5-0-0) was much busier in his opposing crease but took the loss, surrendering a pair of goals on 37 Oil Kings shots.

Jake Neighbours and Josh Williams (EN) were the other goal scorers for Edmonton.

Ethan McIndoe set up Latimer for his first career goal early in the first period, continuing to provide depth to the Club tallying four points in his last four games (2G, 2A).

It was the lone goal for either side during the opening 20 minutes, which saw the Oil Kings outshoot the Warriors, 12-7.

At the eight-minute mark of the second, the Oil Kings took their second minor penalty of the game and first of the period, and Moose Jaw would capitalize.

A shot from near the faceoff dot to Cossa's right fooled the netminder, making it a 1-1 game at 9:12.

It was a power play goal by Moose Jaw, which rounded out scoring after 40 minutes with shots on goal favouring Edmonton, 24-16.

In the third, Jake Neighbours broke the 1-1 tie with his seventh of the season, assisted by Keagan Slaney and Tyler Horstmann, to make it 2-1 Oil Kings at 2:40.

Josh Williams with his 13th of the campaign iced the victory for the home team; a power play marker into an empty net with just two seconds left to play in regulation.

Final shots on goal were 38-25, Oil Kings.

Moose Jaw was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Edmonton was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

Sebastian Cossa (EDM) (3), Jake Neighbours (EDM) (2), and Carson Latimer (EDM) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.

Wyatt McLeod, Matthew Robertson and Ethan Cap each wore an "A" in the absence of captain Scott Atkinson who was sidelined due to injury.

The Oil Kings travel to Calgary to take on the Hitmen on Friday, December 6 at 7:00 PM before the two teams clash once again on Saturday, December 7 at 7:00 PM for the Oil Kings annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by The Brick. Limited tickets to the Teddy Bear Toss are still available.
