Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release
Kokomo, IN - The Traverse City Pit Spitters beat the Kokomo Jackrabbits 4-3 in 10 innings on Thursday, in a playoff caliber game.
With both teams at the top of the Great Lakes East, they would face off in the first round of the playoffs if the season ended today. The game was back and forth, giving off a postseason atmosphere. With the win, Traverse City moves to one game back in the overall standings.
Benjamin Wilson made his first start of the season, throwing three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. He only allowed one hit, but his five walks pulled him from the game prematurely.
Traverse City scored first on an RBI by Christian Faust in the second. After four shutout innings, the Jackrabbits tied the game in the fifth, but the Pit Spitters would answer right back.
Camden Traficante stayed hot at the plate, doubling home Trey Yunger in the top of the seventh. After Kokomo tied it again in the eighth, it was Miguel Useche's time to shine. After blasting his first home run of the year yesterday, he came through with an RBI single in the top of the ninth. Yunger scored all three runs for his team in the nine innings played.
The Jackrabbits loaded the bases in the bottom half, and with two outs got an RBI hit. But John Beuckelaere stranded them loaded with an inning-ending popout, sending the game to extras.
In extras, Michael Stygles bunted Faust to third and reached on a single as nobody covered first. After a walk to Mario Camilletti, Tito Flores delivered the fourth go-ahead at bat of the night for the Pit Spitters with a sac fly to center. Beuckelaere sat the Jackrabbits down in order in the bottom half, securing the victory for his team.
Camilletti worked walk number 52 on the season, first in the Northwoods League. His .500 OBP ranks second.
Zeb Roos was hit by another pitch tonight, giving him a league high 19 on the season.
Up Next
The Pit Spitters have the chance to take over first place in the overall standings tomorrow. A win would tie them atop the standings with Kokomo, but the head-to-head tiebreaker would give them the advantage. Rylan Tinsley will take the hill, coming off five shutout innings against Kokomo on July 31.
