Traverse City, MI - The Traverse City Pit Spitters win game two of the series against the Kenosha Kingfish, 4-3, in front of 3,311 fans at Turtle Creek Stadium. The Pit Spitters improve to 41-29 on the season and 19-16 in the second half.
Kenosha's offense got it started in the top of the second inning with back-to-back singles from Joe Wike and Dan Laughery with two outs. Following an Owen Brock hit by pitch to load the bases, Nico Bermeo singled to center field scoring Wike and Laughery to give the Kingfish an early 2-0 lead. The Pit Spitters offense started in the bottom of the third as Alec Atkinson drew a lead off walk followed by a hit by pitch from Ethan Hyme. Andrew Mannelly singled to center field, scoring Atkinson and Hyme to tie the game at 2-2. Brock and Bermeo hit back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the fifth inning for the Kingfish. Giovany Lorenzo dropped a sacrifice bunt, to score Brock, giving the Kingfish a 3-2 lead. Despite the deficit, the Pit Spitters weren't done yet. In the bottom of the ninth, as Devin Hukill and Hyme both were hit by a pitch. Evan Orzech then loaded the bases with a walk. Mannelly then drew a walk, bringing in Hukill to tie the game at 3-3. Colin Summerhill singled, scoring Camden Traficante to walk-off the Kingfish 4-3.
The Pit Spitters improve to 41-29 on the season and 19-16 in the second half, while the Kingfish drop to 29-41 overall and 12-25 in the second half. The Pit Spitters starting pitcher Josh Lanham threw five innings, giving up three runs on five hits striking out six. Hayden Brown threw two innings of scoreless relief, walking one and striking out three. Mitch Grannan threw the final two innings, striking out four, walking one and earning the win.
The Pit Spitters stay at Turtle Creek Stadium for game one of the series against the Rockford Rivets. First pitch is 7:05PM. Game one of the Great Lakes Division Playoffs is Sunday, August 13 at 5:05PM against the Kalamazoo Growlers at Turtle Creek Stadium.
