December 17, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Spitfires defended home ice with two solid efforts from Henault and Johnston to cap the team's 5th straight win.
In the first period, the Spitfires got on the board early with a powerplay opportunity. Henault fed it to Johnston who crept down the wing and slid the puck back door to a wide open Maggio who scored his 9th on the season. Eight and a half minutes later the Spitfires doubled their lead to 2-0 with D'Amico's 7th on the season. The Spitfires had sustained pressure on the Greyhounds and Henault made a slick pass to D'Amico who was wide open on the back door who made no mistake. The Spitfires were leading the game 2-0 on the scoreboard and 19-5 in shots.
In the 2nd period the Greyhounds had a pushback. The Soo scored on the powerplay to make it a 2-1 game just under halfway through the frame. But just a minute later Johnston scored his 16th on a pass from Renwick to restore the two goal lead. Just 4 minutes later, the Soo scored to bring the game back within one goal. After 40 minutes of play, the Spitfires had a narrow 3-2 lead but lead 30-23 in shots.
In the third period, the Soo tied the game at 3 on another powerplay goal just 5:33 into the period. Each team had their chances but both failed to capitalized in regulation and we were off to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Soo won the faceoff and had possession as they tried to enter the zone Henault bumped his man off the puck and picked it up and passed it to Johnston in the middle of the ice. Henault got on his horse and sped up to make it a 2 on 1 for the Spitfires and Johnston passed it to Henault and he skated and patiently outplayed the defense and goalie before sniping it top shelf to win the game for the Spitfires.
The Spitfires are back in action on Friday November 17th in Saginaw as they take on the Spirit before the Christmas break. The Spitfires next home game is Friday December 31st with puck drop at 2:05pm.
