OHL Partners with HONE Athletics in Support of Player Communication and Mental Health
December 17, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) News Release
Toronto, Ont. - Continuing to place the mental health of its players at the forefront, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) is pleased to be partnering with HONE Athletics in a new initiative that will provide OHL member teams with the tools to effectively engage players in matters of communication and mental health.
HONE Athletics was created by two sport psychotherapists who realized they needed a way to get ahead of the issues that athletes commonly face. HONE's unique digital platform delivers a weekly anonymous survey to players as a simple way for coaches to maintain a pulse on team well-being. The goal is better communication and the ability to co-create a united sporting environment, leading to improved performance both on the ice and in life.
"This partnership is about putting communication with our players and their mental health first," said OHL Commissioner David Branch. "As a League, we want to provide our players with an accessible platform where they can comfortably share matters pertaining to their mental health and day-to-day well-being. This initiative builds off the work our League is already doing in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, and it will be of great benefit to our players."
In partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association since 2014, the OHL Talk Today program has provided safeTALK mental health training to over 1,600 players, coaches, staff and billets.
For the past seven years, HONE founders Jessica Renney and Paula McQuaid have provided psychoeducational workshops to athletes, parents, and coaches on the topic of Mental Health in Sport and continue to be leaders in advocating for a "Culture First" approach to well-being.
"We're excited to have the OHL sign on with our platform," said co-founder Jessica Renney. "We know that athletes thrive in healthy environments and it has become our mission to empower sport leaders with the data and tools needed to support well-being. We applaud the OHL for being the first league to sign on and commit to their athletes this way."
OHL member teams have received training on the use of the new HONE app, and will be fully utilizing the platform in the new year.
