Spirited Second Sinks Spits
October 8, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release
Jordan Szwarz scored twice and Mavric Parks turned aside 38 shots as the Saginaw Spirit beat the Windsor Spitfires 5-2 on Thursday night.
The Spirit set the tone early in the game, dominating the first few minutes. But Jack Campbell stood tall, turning aside seven shots in the first five minutes.
Saginaw's sustained pressure finally paid off 13 minutes into the first with a strange goal. A harmless looking point shot from Matt Ashman deflected off Spits defenceman Craig Duininck and handcuffed Campbell to make it 1-0 Spirit.
The Spits got a spark late in the first period when Kyle Tarini fought Spirit winger Alex Lepkowski. A point shot from Michael MacIntyre pinballed off Zack Kassian, then Alexander Khokhlachev, and eventually past Parks to tie the game 1-1 heading into the second.
Saginaw exploded offensively in the second period, scoring three goals in a span of just 2:17.
Jordan Szwarz led the assault, scoring on the power play. He added his second of the game on his next shift, tipping in a point shot. Michael Kantor extended the Spirit lead just 35 seconds later, with his first of the season, to give the Spirit a commanding 4-1 lead.
The Spitfires pulled within two on the power play midway through the frame. Darting down the left wing, Zack Kassian found a streaking Khokhlachev with a perfect backhand pass for his second of the night, and fifth of the season, to make it 4-2.
Spitfires coach Bob Jones juggled his lines in the third period, but couldn't find a formula to solve Parks.
Saginaw sealed the win when Vincent Trocheck out-muscled Stephen Johnston on a neutral zone faceoff and potted an empty netter to make it 5-2.
Notes:
Jack Campbell turned aside 29 shots in his sixth start of the season. The Spitfires were 1-for-5 on the power play. Saginaw went 1-for-2 with the man advantage. Of the Spitfires 30 goals against this season, 17 have come in the second period. The win lifted Saginaw's record to 5-1-0. The Spits fell to 3-4-0. The Spitfires dressed seven defencemen tonight. Craig Duininck returned to the line-up after serving his two-game suspension for a fight on September 30th. Nick Ebert also returned from a minor injury. Andrew Clouthier was suspended five games for instigating a fight with Mississauga forward Gregg Sutch late in the game on October 1st. Clouthier is eligible to return on October 16th. Other Spitfire scratches include Nick Czinder, Josh Malecki and Cam Fowler, who makes his NHL debut with the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow night in Detroit. Attendance at tonight's game was 5760.
