Saginaw Spirit News Release
Kitchener, Ontario - On Friday afternoon, the Saginaw Spirit began their Exhibition season against the North Bay Battalion in the 2018 Preseason Showcase hosted by the Kitchener Rangers at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium in Kitchener, Ontario.
The Spirit sat out veterans Albert Michnac, Hayden Davis, Ivan Prosvetov, Damien Giroux, Jake Goldowski, and Caleb Everett for their first tune-up heading into the 2018-19 regular season.
Seeing their first action in a Spirit uniform was 2016 second round pick Bode Wilde, who was drafted by the New York Islanders in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft. 2018 first round pick Cole Perfetti and second rounders' Ethan Cardwell and Tristan Lennox also donned the Spirit Red, White, and Blue for the first time this afternoon.
D.J. Busdeker (Dexter, MI) got the Spirit on the board first. Blade Jenkins (New York Islanders) got the puck from behind the net and fed Busdeker in the slot for his first goal of the preseason at 17:56.
In the second period, the Spirit extended their lead to 2-0 when Brady Gilmour (Detroit Red Wings) picked the puck off of a North Bay defender, and deked North Bay goaltender Joe Vrbetic. The Spirit made it 3-0 when rookie Ethan Cardwell found Bode Wilde (New York Islanders) at the left point position. Wilde showed a determination and finesse as he weaved through the North Bay defense, before finally beating Vrbetic over the blocker side.
The Spirit continued to pressure the Battalion in the third period, to help preserve the shutout for Cameron Lamour. The Spirit outshot the Battalion 39-24 and took their first game of the three-game tournament, 3-0.
The Spirit will take on the host Kitchener Rangers on Saturday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m. at The Aud. For coverage, follow the Spirit on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and follow the game live on gamecentre.
