SAGINAW, MI - In the closing minutes before the OHL trade deadline, Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill announced a trade that brings in 19-year old Right Wing Hayden Hodgson from the Sarnia Sting in exchange for Center Devon Paliani, a second round pick in 2019 (BAR), a third round pick in 2017 (NIA), a fourth round pick in 2016 (KGN), and a conditional fourth round pick in 2018 (MIS).

A native of Leamington, Ontario, Hodgson is currently in his fourth season in the OHL. Hodgson is a third round pick of the Erie Otters in 2012. After a season and a half with the Otters, Hodgson was dealt to the Sarnia Sting. In his OHL career that has spanned over 200 games, Hodgson has 45 goals, 37 assists, and 239 penalty minutes.

"Hayden is a player that as an organization we have targeted for quite some time," said Drinkill.

"He fills a need on our team in terms of size, grit and scoring ability. Hodgson is a player that has scored in this league and we feel with our group, he will contribute in a big way for the Spirit going forward. We are extremely excited about this addition and cannot wait to see Hayden in our lineup."

In the trade, the Spirit parted ways with second-year centerman Devon Paliani. Paliani is a 2012 14th round pick of the Kingston Frontenacs, but started his OHL career with the Sudbury Wolves in 2014. A trade brought him to Saginaw early in the 2014-15 season, with Paliani putting up 21 points in 59 games during his freshman OHL campaign. This season, Paliani registered four goals and 10 assists in 35 games along with 32 penalty minutes. Paliani played 94 games in a Spirit uniform and his next game will be his 100th career OHL game.

"Devon is a player that has had to work for everything he has gotten in his career and I have nothing but respect for him," said Drinkill of the departing Paliani.

"As an organization, we want to thank him for being such a great ambassador to the community and leaving everything he had out on the ice."
