State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Ronnierd Garcia's walk-off infield single in the tenth inning gave the State College Spikes a 2-1 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters on Saturday, keeping the Spikes in the New York-Penn League Wild Card led with just two games left in the regular season.

The Spikes and West Virginia each won to bump their records up to 40-34, but State College holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. Should the Spikes clinch the Wild Card berth, which could occur Sunday night, they would meet Williamsport (45-29) in the best-of-3 NYPL Semfinal Series. Game 1 of that series would be held at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.

Garcia, who collected his first triple of the year in the second inning, stepped up with the bases loaded and one out in the tenth and bounced a ball to shortstop that was hard to play, enabling Leobaldo Pina to score.

Pina had provided the game-winning single in the Spikes' only other walk-off win this year, a triumph over Batavia on July 20.

State College collected 13 hits on the night, but stranded 10 runners in the first nine innings. The Spikes fell behind in the fourth when Dylan Bosheers drove a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Jose Pujols.

However, State College starter Jorge Rodriguez bounced back to go 6 2/3 innings and give up just four hits and three walks while striking out four batters.

In the sixth, the Spikes tied the game on R.J. Dennard's RBI double, one of two hits for him on the night.

Reliever David Oca (1-0) then made his Spikes debut and held the Crosscutters off the board over 3 1/3 innings. Oca, the only left-hander in the State College bullpen, allowed one hit and struck out two batters on the night before Garcia delivered his heroics.

Williamsport reliever Jacob Waguespack (0-1) took the loss after coming on in the tenth and yielding two hits and two walks, one intentional. Waguespack recorded a strikeout for his only out.

Five Spikes produced multi-hit games one night after six State College players accomplished the feat against Batavia.

The win also ran the Spikes' home winning streak to three games, and was just their second victory over Williamsport this season.

Sunday, the Spikes finish off the regular-season home slate with a 6:05 p.m. matchup against Williamsport. Right-hander Dailyn Martinez (4-5) takes the hill for State College in the crucial contest, while Williamsport will go with right-hander Luis Morales (1-2).

The regular season home finale features Fan Appreciation Night, featuring great prize giveaways throughout the 6:05 p.m. game against the Crosscutters. Fans will be amazed by the Regular Season Grand Finale FIREWORKS show after the game, and the Spikes' alternate blue jerseys worn during all 10 seasons will be up for bids in a Game-Used Jersey Auction, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State.

Sunday night will also feature the final HD Weekend giveaway, presented by Aaron's, as one lucky fan will win a 65-inch smart High Definition television to create the perfect centerpiece for an HD entertainment system. Plus, kids 12 and under can run the bases after the game thanks to Clinical Outcomes Group, Inc.

In addition, college students across Central PA can enjoy even more value during every remaining Spikes home game with the College 3-2-1 Special. The College 3-2-1 Special offers any college student presenting a valid student ID at ticket and concessions windows $3 Outfield Bleacher seats or $3 off seat in any other ballpark section, excluding Pepsi Picnic Pavilion and suites, plus $2 medium sodas and $1 hot dogs all game long.
