Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The chances of a post-season opportunity for the Spinners were less than one percent and following nine Vermont Lake Monsters runs in the seventh and eighth inning they became nil, as Lowell fell, 12-6, Saturday night at LeLacheur Park. For the sixth consecutive season, the Spinners will watch the NYPL playoffs from the sidelines.

Lowell (36-38) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Jeremy Rivera worked a leadoff walk and came around to score on a one-out double by Tyler Spoon.

Vermont (32-41) took the lead in the fourth inning on a two-out double by Chris Iriart, tying the score at one, and a single by Brett Siddall to give the Lake Monsters a 2-1 lead.

The Spinners pulled even in the sixth, again capitalizing on a double by Spoon. A two-out double by Josh Ockimey scored Spoon to tie the score at two.

The Lake Monsters broke open the game in the seventh, re-taking the lead immediately on a lead-off home run by Siddall. After Ryan Howell followed with a single, Danny Zandona came in from the bullpen. After loading the bases with one out, a passed ball, base hit and groundout brought home all three runners to give Vermont a 6-2 lead.

Vermont added to their lead in the eighth inning, getting to the tandem of Javier Rodriguez and Enfember Martinez for five runs, capped by Skye Bolt's three-run double, to put the game out of reach at 11-2.

After Vermont got a run in the ninth on a home run by Iriart the Spinners got a pair back in the bottom half before being closed out.

The Spinners had 10 hits but were just 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Spoon and Ockimey each had two doubles, with Ockimey driving in three, while Tate Matheny also had a two-hit night.

Travis Lakins made his Spinners debut and second outing as a professional, throwing two hitless innings, striking out three. Daniel Gonzalez (3-3, 3.29) followed with four-plus innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out one. Zandona allowed a pair of runs, one earned on two hits and a walk, striking out one in one inning. Rodriguez did not retire a batter, walking all three he faced. All three runners scored against Martinez, who was charged with three runs of his own over two innings of work.

The two teams meet again Sunday afternoon for a 3:05pm first pitch with Logan Allen making his Spinners debut.
