Renegades Fall in Series Opener to Aberdeen

Wappingers Falls, NY - The Hudson Valley Renegades were defeated by the Aberdeen IronBirds by a score of 14-5 on Saturday evening at Dutchess Stadium.

The IronBirds scored a run in the top of the first inning on a solo home run from left fielder D.J. Stewart to take a 1-0 lead. Alejandro Juvier hit a RBI triple in the top of the second inning and scored on a RBI single from center fielder Cedric Mullins, giving the the IronBirds a 3-0 lead.

Aberdeen scored six runs in the top of the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Mullins to bring the score to 9-0 IronBirds. RBI singles from Aberdeen's designated hitter Randy Gassaway, second baseman Drew Turbin, third baseman Alejandro Juvier and a RBI ground out from Cedric Mullins extended the IronBirds lead to 13-0.

The Renegades responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI singles from designated hitter Alex Schmidt and center fielder Garrett Whitley to cut the score to 13-2. Shortstop Michael Russell led off the bottom of the fifth inning on a double and scored on a RBI double from Hector Montes to bring the score to 13-3.

Aberdeen's shortstop Ricardo Andujar walked to lead off the top of the seventh inning and scored on a RBI groundout from first baseman Steve Laurino to give the IronBirds a 14-3 lead. A RBI single from Hudson Valley's Joe McCarthy in the bottom of the seventh inning brought the score to 14-4 and right fielder Manny Sanchez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to finish off the scoring for the night.

Daniel Ayers (2-1) earned the win in relief for Aberdeen as he allowed two runs and one earned run in three innings pitched. Travis Seabrooke started the game for the IronBirds and gave up two runs in four innings of work. Michael Velasquez (2-5) took the loss for Hudson Valley as he allowed three runs in two innings pitched.

With the result, the Renegades see their record fall to 38-36 while Aberdeen improves to 39-35. Hudson Valley currently sits one and a half games behind McNamara Division leaders Staten Island and two games behind in the Wild Card standings.
