-WILD CARD-LEADING SPIKES START LAST REGULAR-SEASON SERIES: The State College Spikes have retaken the lead in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race with three games remaining in the regular season, and continue their 10th Season tonight with the opener of a three-game series against their SawBuck Series rivals, the WIlliamsport Crosscutters. State College and West Virginia each have 39-34 records, but the Spikes have the head-to-head tiebreaker. Whoever wins the Wild Card berth will face WIlliamsport in the best-of-3 Semifinal Series starting on Wednesday. The Crosscutters have already clinched the Pinckney Division, which the Spikes won in 2013 and 2014. The matchup is the next-to-last home game of the season for the Spikes. The Crosscutters are 7-1 on the season against the Spikes. Tonight marks the 117th meeting all-time between the two clubs, with the all-time series sititng at 59-57 in favor of Williamsport.
-LAST GAME: Jacob Evans delivered six strong innings on the mound as the State College Spikes returned to first place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card standings with a 7-2 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Evans rebounded from allowing 10 runs in two-thirds of an inning on Sunday in Mahoning Valley to strike out a career-high nine batters over six innings of work. The southpaw ended up one whiff shy of the Spikes' single-game record. Evans allowed two runs on four hits for his third quality start of six innings or more with three earned runs or leass on the year. Jose Godoy drove in three runs for the Spikes, with Casey Grayson adding two more.
-RODRIGUEZ STARTS FOR SPIKES: State College right-hander Jorge Rodriguez gets his team-leading 14th start of the season for the Spikes as he takes the hill tonight. Rodriguez is facing the Crosscutters for the fourth time this year, and has gone five innings or more in each of his first three starts. The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native has limited right-handed hitters to a .226 batting average this year. Last time out, Rodriguez tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings at Mahoning Valley on Monday, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
-CROSSCUTTERS SEND LEFTWICH TO MOUND: Williamsport right-hander Luke Leftwich will make his ninth start and 11th appearance of the season for the Crosscutters tonight. Leftwich last faced the Spikes on August 24, earning the win with six one-run innings of work and tying a season high with six strikeouts. The Phoenix native has posted a 1.31 ERA at home in five outings, but a 4.74 ERA on the road. Leftwich was drafted in the seventh round by the Phillies this year out of Wofford, following in the footsteps of his father, Phil, who pitched for the Angels from 1993-96, and his grandfather, Tom Timmermann, who pitched for the Tigers from 1969-73 and for the Indians from 1973-74.
-MARTIN EARNS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD: Spikes Athletic Trainer Dan Martin has been named the New York-Penn League Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS). The award is given annually to one member of each of the 16 leagues in Minor League Baseball, as well as one award for the Dominican Summer League, with an additional award is given to the Minor League Coordinator of the Year. Martin is now eligible for the Minor League Trainer of the Year award as well, which will be given at the 2015 Winter Meetings in Nashville, TN.
-GRAYSON GOING BACK TO THE TOP: Spikes infielder Casey Grayson now has two homers and two triples to go with his team-leading 18 doubles this season. Grayson is now fourth in the New York-Penn League in batting average with a .311 mark, and his .419 on-base percentage places him second in the league behind Bobby Wernes of Tri-City. The University of Houston product is second in the NYPL with 74 hits, and is tops in the loop with 45 walks.
-SPIKE MARKS: Pedro Echemendia is first in the NYPL with 25 appearances, and is fourth in saves with 11...Echemendia also leads the Spikes with six wins on the mound, and his 11 saves are the most for any Spikes pitcher since Ronald Uviedo posted a franchise record 12 saves in 2007...The Spikes added catcher Chris Chinea from Rookie-level Johnson City after the Appalachian League season ended Tuesday...Chinea hit .301 with six homers and 27 RBI this year
