-SPIKES HIT THE ROAD TO TAKE ON DOUBLEDAYS IN SERIES OPENER: The State College Spikes, winners of two out of their first three games of the season for the first time since 2006, take their first full-fledged road trip starting tonight when they face the Auburn Doubledays in the initial game of a three-game set. The Spikes are 30-40 all-time against the Doubledays, including a 15-20 mark at Falcon Park in Auburn. In 2006, the last time the Spikes came into Central New York as a Cardinals affiliate, State College only took one of five games from Auburn at Falcon Park. The Doubledays were a Toronto Blue Jays affiliate at the time.
-LAST NIGHT: Bruce Caldwell and Ronald Castillo led the Spikes' offensive charge with four hits apiece as the home club collected 16 hits total to propel them past the Williamsport Crosscutters, 8-3, on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College also got superb pitching from a pair of hurlers making their first pro appearance. 27-year-old rookie Mitch Harris retired all five batters he faced, including a strikeout of the very first batter to oppose him. Kevin Herget earned the victory with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits and a walk.
-O'SHEA DONS SPIKES UNI FOR FIRST TIME IN MOUND START: Left-hander Ben O'Shea makes his first pitching appearance for the Spikes tonight as he takes the ball to start the game. O'Shea spent all of the 2012 season pitching for the Batavia Muckdogs and went 3-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 13 outings (12 starts). The southpaw also faced Auburn twice last year, going 0-1 and allowing six runs, all earned, on 15 hits while striking out seven over nine innings of work. O'Shea was a 35th-round draft choice of the Cardinals in 2012 out of the University of Tampa, where he earned All-Conference and All-Region honors last spring.
-WILLIAMS TRANSITIONS TO PITCHING ROLE FOR DOUBLEDAYS: Right-hander Deion Williams will go to the mound for just the third time as a professional as he starts for Auburn. Williams, a 16th-round draft choice of the Nationals in 2011, spent most of the past two years as an infielder with the Gulf Coast League Nationals after being selected out of Redan High School in Georgia. Following a brief hiatus from the field, Williams re-emerged as a pitcher and tossed 2 2/3 frames of scoreless ball in the final week of the GCL season. The Stone Mountain, GA native is the son of former major leaguer Dion Williams and the grandson of longtime Red Sox and Brewers first baseman George Scott.
-SPIKES HONOR ONE MILLIONTH FAN: Monday night, the State College Spikes kicked off the Year of the Millionth Fan in grand style by honoring the one-millionth fan in team history. After whittling down the Opening Night crowd of 5,155 throughout the night, William Kenyon of State College emerged as the Spikes' Millionth Fan in a post-game ceremony, winning a one-of-a-kind Spikes prize package
-SPIKE MARKS: Cesar Valera is 7-for-15 in his first three games with the Spikes, putting him eighth in the NYPL in batting average in the young season with a .467 mark...The seven hits lead the league, with Caldwell and Castillo each just a hit behind him at six apiece...The Spikes are hitting .316 as a team so far this year
