Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Rennie takes the tough loss
IronBirds RHP Luc Rennie was the losing pitcher in last night's 6-2 loss in Aberdeen to the Hudson Valley Renegades. Rennie went 4.2 innings, allowed five hits, one run, walking three and striking out seven. LHP Jorge Rivera and LHP Alex Santana also made their season debuts last night, as Hudson Valley earned a three game sweep to open the 2013 New York Penn League season.
Strike three! You're out!
Through three games, the IronBirds' pitching staff has recorded 31 strikeouts. They are tied for the league lead with the team they just finished playing, the Hudson Valley Renegades. Luc Rennie leads the team with seven batters fanned.
MCU Park "Re-Opening Day"
The Brooklyn Cyclones' home opener against the Staten Island Yankees was rained out on Tuesday night, so tonight is the official home opener for the New York Mets' affiliate. MCU Park sustained tremendous damage when Hurricane Sandy came ashore back in the fall. In addition to the field being destroyed, the front offices were flooded out. As a result, the field is now entirely turf, save for the pitcher's mound and home plate circle.
On the mound tonight...
RHP Austin Urban will make his IronBirds' debut tonight. Urban was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 27th round of the 2010 MLB Draft, but did not sign. He then was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 41st round of the 2011 MLB Draft. After signing with the Cubs, Urban was expected to pitch in the minors, but a shoulder injury sidelined him for the entire 2012 season. Opposing him on the bump for the Brooklyn Cyclones will be RHP John Gant. Gant, a 21st round draft pick in 2011, will be making his New York Penn League debut. Gant has only pitched in 16 games since signing with the New York Mets.
Hitting the road
The IronBirds will be playing their first road game of 2013 tonight. The 2013 season will see Aberdeen take three separate six game road trips. The first six game trip begins with a date in Brooklyn tonight. After Saturday's game, the IronBirds will head to Staten Island to do battle with the Yankees. They return home a week from tonight and welcome the Cyclones to Ripken Stadium for a brief two game series.
