Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
ABERDEEN, MD (June 19, 2012) - Ok, so maybe it's a tad early to call for the broomsticks, but the Hudson Valley Renegades can be pleased with a 3-0 start to the season. The 2012 NY-Penn League Champions closed out their series against the IronBirds with a 6-2 victory in front of another large crowd at Ripken Stadium. A pair of late home runs by Ariel Soriano and Oscar Hernandez was the main difference just a night after the Renegades scored 10 runs on 11 hits. And yes, once again, the pitching was equally as impressive.
Fairly slow starts were common throughout the series as the teams took a scoreless tie into the fourth inning. Longer leashes on lefties Jordan Harrison and Chris Kirsch allowed the tandem to go six innings in the first two games of the series for manager Michael Johns. Wednesday night's starter John Farrell was not afforded such a luxury but did look strong in a perfect inning and two thirds in which he struck out two. His successor, Kevin Brandt, would be the real story in long relief, on a night when the Renegades bullpen could have used a decent respite before upcoming series against Brooklyn and Staten Island.
It all started with two outs in the Hudson Valley fourth. James Harris doubled off IronBirds starter Luc Rennie before stealing third, his second stolen base of the series. Ryan McChesney, fresh off a 4-for-5 game the night before, singled into center field to make it 1-0. Brandt kept the score intact through the middle innings with four and a third of scoreless relief in which he allowed just three hits and a walk. It was just one of those series for Aberdeen, who just never seemed to get the offense going.
The top of the seventh opened with a walk to Pat Blair, the former Wake Forest Demon Deacon who was making his season debut at shortstop. That brought up Soriano, who took Jorge Rivera deep to left for the Renegades first home run of the year. Rivera would retire the next three hitters but the deficit was now 3-0. The seventh and eighth innings belonged to 'Gades reliever Corey MacDonald, who racked up three strikeouts across two perfect innings in his first appearance out of the pen.
In the ninth, Blair lit the match with a leadoff single off Alex Santana before stealing second. Soriano then singled into center and stole second as well, putting a pair of runners in scoring position for catcher Oscar Hernandez. Batting cleanup for the third straight game, he was hitless in his first 13 at bats. The monkey got off his back as the ball cleared the left field wall, a three-run home run for Hernandez that let the air out of the building and gave the Renegades a 6-0 lead. Aberdeen mounted a small threat with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough.
NOTES: The Renegades outscored the IronBirds 21-7 in the three-game series...Aberdeen has now lost 16 of the last 17 meetings between the two teams dating back to last season...Hudson Valley was 8-for-10 on stolen bases during the series yet did not attempt any stolen bases in the second game.
