State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes scored a sweep of the Jamestown Jammers on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, rallying from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth to win the completion of a game suspended on June 25, 9-8, then trouncing the Jammers in the night's second game, 8-2.
The pair of wins reduced the Spikes' (44-25) magic number to clinch a postseason berth to two, meaning a State College win and Lowell loss on Friday punches the Spikes' ticket to the New York-Penn League playoffs. The Spikes also extended their Pinckney Division lead over Jamestown (41-28) to three games.
The game was tied, 4-4, going into the ninth inning, but Jamestown (41-27) scored four runs in the top half, the first on a solo home run by Harold Ramirez, to stake themselves to the lead. However, the Spikes (43-25) came back with a two-run homer by Ronald Castillo and a solo homer by Carson Kelly to cut the deficit to 8-7.
Mason Katz then contributed a pinch-hit, one-out single to put the tying run on base. Following a flyout to center, Jimmy Bosco hammered a base hit to right field that was erred upon to allow Katz to score and knot the game at 8-8. One batter later, Valera singled to right field to allow the winning run to score with the Spikes' eighth walk-off victory of the year.
Brett Wiley also homered for the Spikes, giving them a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning with a solo shot. Valera, Bosco and Wiley each contributed three hits in the completion of the suspended game, which was picked up in the bottom of the second inning with State College leading, 2-0.
Bosco collected a total of five hits on the night, adding a pair of doubles in the second game of the night.
Ramirez went 4-for-5 in the game for the Jammers. Adam Landecker also contributed three hits, including a double, and scored two runs while driving in two.
The Spikes then broke open the second game with three runs in the third inning and a five-run fourth. State College took advantage of three fourth-inning errors to aid in the effort. Alex De Leon also delivered the Spikes' fourth homer of the night with a solo blast in the frame.
Steven Ramos recorded a total of three hits and two runs batted in on the night to maintain his league-leading .356 batting average.
Jeff Rauh (2-0) picked up the win in relief for State College in the first game completed on Thursday despite allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over 1 1/3 innings. Nick Petree began the evening in what was technically a relief appearance by allowing four runs, a season high, on eight hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings. Petree also struck out three.
Andrew Pierce (2-2) earned the win in game two with six innings of work in which he allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out five.
Kurt Yacko (0-1) took the loss in Thursday's first game after allowing the Spikes' winning run, which was unearned, on two hits over 1/3 of an inning. Starter Jackson Lodge (4-4) received the loss for Jamestown in game two after yielding all eight State College runs, four of them earned, on eight hits and a walk while striking out two.
The Jammers committed a total of nine errors across both games, seven of them actually committed on Thursday night.
