Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

ABERDEEN, MD - Sometimes one pitch and one swing can decide an entire ballgame. Take for instance Thursday night's game between the Renegades and IronBirds in the second-to-last meeting of the season between the two teams. Jaime Schultz may have well had his best start of the season, but he left a 1-1 fastball up in the zone for Conor Bierfeldt, who was leading off the inning. Aberdeen's left fielder launched the pitch over the left field wall and the IronBirds never looked back in what was ultimately a hard fought 1-0 victory.

The Renegades second inning started with a leadoff single from Ty Young and a one out single by John Alexander. James Harris sent a slow grounder to second that forced Alexander out, but kept runners at the corners for the ninth hitter Julian Morillo. Austin Urban fell behind 2-0 before getting Morillo to fly out to right to end the inning.

With 10 home runs coming in, including two against the Renegades, it was no shock when Bierfeldt took Schultz deep to give Aberdeen a 1-0 lead. The blast never fazed the Renegades righthander, who flashed pinpoint control all evening to retire the side in order. He would only give up two more hits over his final four frames, and finished with six strikeouts across five superb innings in his longest start of the year.

Young tried getting it started again in the fourth with a well struck one out single into center field. However, Darryl George grounded into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. In Urban's final inning in the sixth, he surrendered a leadoff bunt single to Julian Ridings before getting another double play up the middle off the bat of Ariel Soriano. Two straight singles by Johnny Field and Omar Narvaez extended the inning for Young, but he grounded out to first to end Urban's night on top.

Facing All-Star Jimmy Yacabonis in the seventh, George led off with a walk before Alexander singled him to second on an 0-2 pitch. Harris then struck out looking before Morillo grounded into a fielder's choice, keeping runners at the corners with two outs for Ridings. Yacabonis got out of the inning with a fly out to left, and another opportunity went away for the Renegades.

Their final chance came in the ninth against side-arming lefthander Donnie Hart, who was the winning pitcher last Wednesday night at Dutchess Stadium in extra innings. Despite a one out single by George, Hart made sure the game ended in nine innings and got a groundball to first off the bat of Alexander. His counterpart Trey Mancini threw out George at second and got back to the base in time to receive the return throw and complete the game-ending double play.
