Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Bierfeldt's Blast Inches IronBirds Past Renegades
Conor Bierfeldt hammered a 94 MPH fastball from Renegades starting pitcher Jaime Schultz over the 378-sign in left-centerfield in the second inning to give the IronBirds a 1-0 lead. Bierfeldt's solo shot was his 11th of the season, putting him in a three-way tie for the league lead. Little did anyone know that it would be all the offense Aberdeen would need to secure their 35th win of the season. From that point of the game on, both teams pitchers matched each other, pitch for pitch in a classic pitcher's duel. The IronBirds were only able to manage three hits in the game including the Bierfeldt home run. Hudson Valley picked up eight hits -- all singles -- but were unable to get a big hit to get a run in.
Stellar Pitching on Both Sides
Both teams pitched more than good enough to get a win. For the IronBirds, Austin Urban put together what was probably his best pitching performance of the season. He pitched six scoreless innings allowing no walks and striking out six. He induced two double plays to avoid being hurt by the six singles he gave up. Jimmy Yacabonis and Donnie Hart pitched the final three innings to secure the win. Yacabonis escaped a jam in the seventh after giving two singles to start the inning. After a 1-2-3 eighth inning by Yacabonis, Hart was aided by a stellar 3-6-3 double-play, started by Trey Mancini and finished by Jared Breen, to get the save in the ninth. Schultz and Colten Reavis were just as formidable for the Renegades. Combined they pitched eight innings, gave up three hits, struck out 10 and didn't walk any batters.
Bombing Bierfeldt
Bierfeldt is quite a run over the last two weeks. In 16 games since August 14th, Bierfeldt has mashed 11 extra-base hits. He has hit six doubles, a triple and four home runs during that span, raising his slugging percentage 53 points to .498. Bierfeldt has hit three home runs in the last four games and his 11 total is just one shy of the 12 home runs hit by David Anderson in 2010.
On the mound tonight..
The IronBirds will send RHP Dylan Rheault to the hill tonight. His last appearance came on 8/24 when he 4 2/3 innings of one run, two-hit ball against Connecticut. It will be just his fourth start of the season as he does the majority of his work out of the bullpen. LHP Chris Kirsch gets the nod for Hudson Valley. He is second on the team with 71 1/3 innings pitched, accumulating a 3.03 ERA in the process. He has racked up 50 strikeouts while walking just six batters on the year.
