Spikes Take Control Early to Stop Spinners and Take 4-2 Win

State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Nick Kingham delivered five strong innings on the mound to earn his second career win as Chris Lashmet gave the State College Spikes a first-inning lead they would not relinquish in a 4-2 victory over the Lowell Spinners on Sunday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Lashmet, the Pirates' 33rd-round draft pick in 2011, doubled to the base of the wall in right field with one out in the initial frame to score Alex Fuselier and Alex Dickerson and give State College (14-29) the first lead of the game. Ashley Ponce then led off the second inning with a single and came around to score on Taylor Lewis's sacrifice fly to make it 3-0, Spikes.

Meanwhile, Kingham (2-2) retired the first eight batters he faced in the game before a third-inning single. The right-hander also allowed only one run, which scored on Jose Garcia's solo home run to left field in the fourth inning. It was the third straight start in which Kingham has allowed only one run on a solo home run. The 2010 fourth-round draft pick yielded four hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings to earn the win.

Lowell (19-24) edged closer in the seventh inning, when Drew Turocy reached base on a two-out infield single and eventually scored on Matty Johnson's double. However, State College had the last response in the game, as Samuel Gonzalez smashed a 2-1 pitch from Spinners reliever Mike McCarthy over the left-center field wall for his first home run as a Spike. The insurance run gave the Spikes their final margin of victory.

Gonzalez was the only Spikes player with multiple hits, while Kirk Singertripled in the seventh inning to tie Lewis for the team lead and close to within one three-base hit of the New York-Penn League lead.

Emmanuel De Leon (2) allowed two walks, but no runs, in picking up his second save in as many opportunities.

Joe Holtmeyer (0-1) started for the Spinners in his first appearance since coming off the Disabled List, but was tagged with his first professional loss after allowing Lashmet's two-run double in his only inning of work. Holtmeyer gave up a total of two hits and struck out one batter.

Monday, the Spikes and Spinners finish their three-game series with a special noon game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will have right-hander Trent Stevenson (0-0) on the mound. Stevenson rejoined the Spikes on Wednesday after pitching in State College during the 2010 season, and threw four scoreless innings of relief on Thursday against Tri-City. Lowell will go with right-hander Raynel Velette (1-1) on the mound.
