NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers, fueled by a five-run fifth inning, took down the Batavia Muckdogs 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium.
Tommy Collier, who tossed five shutout frames in his Tigers debut, followed up that performance with 5.2 great innings of work. He gave up just one run on three hits and struck out a season-high seven to earn his first professional win.
The Tigers jumped on top with a run in the first inning on a Dean Green RBI single that scored Eugenio Suarez. Batavia though would tie the game at one in the third on a Joey Bergman solo home run, his second of the year.
Connecticut regained the lead in the fourth on a Jeff Holm solo shot to right field, his fifth long ball of the season, which put the Tigers up 2-1.
The Tigers would then pour it on in the sixth inning with five runs across in the frame. After a Jason King leadoff homer, his team-leading sixth home run of the season, Connecticut would add four more runs in the inning to break the game open.
Ryan Woolley, Guido Knudson and Pedro Perez combined to shutdown the Muckdogs offense the rest of the way and preserve the win. Jonathan Cornelius suffered his second loss of the season for Batavia.
Aaron Westlake, in his second game with Connecticut, had his first two RBI's this afternoon, while Holm and Green also each had two RBI's for the Tigers.
The Tigers will try to sweep the three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs in the series finale tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
