Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Today's Match-up
In a rare day game at Ripken Stadium, the Aberdeen IronBirds look to even their series up at one game apiece with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians). The IronBirds dropped their second game in as many nights yesterday by a final score of 4-1. Holding a 1-0 lead in the eighth, the Scrappers struck for four runs on six hits off of relievers Devin Jones and Enrico Jimenez. Aberdeen will have left-hander Trent Howard on the hill this afternoon. The seventh-round pick by the Baltimore Orioles in this year's draft, Howard pitched six shutout innings his last time out against the Batavia Muckdogs. He'll go up against fellow left-hander Danny Jimenez.
Cowan Can't Win
IronBrids starter Jake Cowan turned in another quality start last night. The right-hander allowed two hits and two walks in six shutout innings of work. He struck out eight scrappers. Cowan did not factor into the decision. Despite having a 3.54 ERA, he has not won a game yet this year. The IronBirds are 1-8 in games Cowan starts.
Need to Score
The IronBirds were held to just one run on six hits in last night's loss. On the season, Aberdeen has been held to one run or less 13 times this season. The club has lost all 13 of those games. On the season, the IronBirds have a league-worst 5.11 team ERA.
Davis Keeps Hitting
IronBirds leadoff hitter Glynn Davis picked up three more hits in last night's loss. He is now batting a team-leading .308. Davis also leads the club with five three-hit games. Last night, he also stole his league-leading 17th base of the season.
Leonora Bats Third
Second baseman Dudley Leonora is batting third today for the first time this season. Normal number three hitter, Mychal Givens, has been dropped to the six spot in the order. Leonora is batting a team-leading .333 in the month of July.
Going Green Day
The IronBirds are playing an afternoon game today because it's Going Green Day at Ripken Stadium. The IronBirds will save energy by keeping the stadium lights off. Also, booths around the stadium will promote environmental awareness.
