STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - After the Jamestown Jammers turned errors into big innings Saturday, the Staten Island Yankees ï¬âipped the script on Sunday en route to a win, 11-5, at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
The Jammers committed three errors, which helped the Yankees score 10 runs in the middle innings to turn a tie ball game into a rout. The loss drops the Jammers (24-19) a game behind Mahoning Valley for ï¬Ârst place in the Pinckney Division.
Marquise Cooper paced the Jamestown offense with three hits including a double and two runs scored. Ryan Goetz and Nestor Castillo chipped in two hits apiece as eight starters had at least one hit for the Jammers.
After double plays in the ï¬Ârst two innings kept the Yanks off the board, Jamestown took an early lead in the top of the third. Cooper led off with a double and Goetz moved him to third on an inï¬Âeld single. Austin Barnes bounced into a double play that scored Cooper to make it 1-0.
It would be a short-lived advantage for the Jammers as Staten Island got the run right back in the bottom of the third when Cito Culver singled home Mason Williams from second. Another double play by the Jammers would prevent further damage in the inning.
The Yankees would take the lead for good after erupting for four runs in the next frame.
Three straight singles to begin the inning broke the tie before Jhorge Liccien laid down a sacriï¬Âce bunt with runners at second and third. Pitcher Helpi Reyes ï¬Âelded it and threw the ball away to allow two runs to score and Liccien to advance to third. A sac ï¬ây plated the fourth run to make it 5-1.
Barnes delivered a sacriï¬Âce ï¬ây in the top of the ï¬Âfth to cut into the deï¬Âcit, but Staten Island would tack on three more runs in the bottom half, which all came after the second out was recorded. The Yankees scored on a Reymond Nunez double, a ï¬Âelding error and a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead again.
The seesaw continued in the sixth with Jamestown plating two runs on singles by Eddie Rodriguez and Castillo. However, Staten Island scored three in the bottom of the inning on a triple by Cody Grice, a single by Angelo Gumbs and another Nunez double.
Jamestown loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of singles in the eighth inning, but a Cooper RBI single was all the team would get out of it to end the possibility of a comeback.
Wilton Rodriguez earned his ï¬Ârst win for Staten Island after striking out ï¬Âve in ï¬Âve innings and giving up just two runs, while Reyes took the loss for Jamestown after going just 4.2 innings and surrendering seven hits and eight runs.
Nunez paced the Baby Bombers with three doubles, a single and three RBI. Culver and Grumbs both added two singles.
The two teams will wrap up the series Monday at 11 a.m. in Staten Island before the Jammers return home to host Tri-City Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
