State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes' streak of scoreless innings was snapped at 19, but the Spikes' offense produced 10 hits and used a five-run eighth inning to pull away from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and go to a perfect 4-0 at home this year with a 9-2 victory on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
State College (4-2) fell behind, 1-0, after Mahoning Valley (2-4) pushed across a first-inning run off of Spikes starter Jason Creasy, but quickly responded. D.J. Crumlich led off the second inning with a single for the first of his three hits, and State College catcher Ryan Hornback followed with a bunt single to put two runners on. One batter later, Walker Gourley drove in Crumlich with a run-scoring groundout to tie the game, 1-1.
In the fourth inning, Samuel Gonzalez produced an RBI single and Gourley knocked in another run via a sacrifice fly to give the Spikes a 3-1 lead. After the Scrappers scratched out a run in the sixth inning to draw within one, State College retaliated with an RBI double by Jodaneli Carvajal in the seventh. The Spikes then took advantage of two errors and doubles by Jacob Stallings and Hornback to plate quintet of runs in the eighth inning to push the lead to its final margin.
Crumlich posted the second three-hit game of the year for a State College player, while Stallings, Hornback and Gonzalez all had multiple hits. Gourley drove in three runs without the benefit of a hit, adding a bases-loaded walk during the eighth inning.
Creasy started and went four innings for the Spikes, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out four. Dalton Friend (1-0) picked up the win in his second professional appearance, rebounding from allowing six runs without recording an out on Wednesday in Williamsport to yield just one unearned run on two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings. Friend also struck out two.
Mahoning Valley starter Geoffrey Davenport (0-1) took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits over four innings of work. Davenport struck out two in the defeat.
The victory gives the Spikes their best ever start at home in seven years at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 4-2 start is also the best record ever posted by the Spikes after six games in team history.
Sunday, the Spikes and Scrappers wrap up their weekend series with a 6:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will have left-hander Joely Rodriguez (0-0), who also started Tuesday's Home Opener, on the mound, while Mahoning Valley will go with right-hander Mike Sisco (0-1).
