Auburn Doubledays News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, P.A. - The Auburn Doubledays (3-2) surrendered five runs in the fifth inning, turning a tie ball game into a lopsided affair that eventually resulted in a 13-8 Doubledays loss at the hands of the Williamsport Crosscutters (3-2).
Centerfielder Yan Carlos Olmo drove in the first run of the fifth inning for Williamsport on a double to left off Doubledays starter RHP Jason Smith (1-1), who was pulled after giving up the hit. In came reliever RHP Travis Henke for Auburn, who wound up giving up four consecutive singles, plus a walk, before being replaced by RHP John Peters. When all was said and done the Crosscutters sent 11 men to the plate, scoring 5 runs on 6 hits off off three different pitchers.
The Doubledays had tied the game in the top of the inning when SS Stephen Perez tripled to center with one out. Perez then scored from third on a wild pitch by RHP Nicholas Hanson (1-0). It would be the first of two runs Perez would score thanks to Williamsport miscues, as he also scored a run in the seventh on a passed ball..
Auburn scored three runs altogether in the seventh as they tried to mount a comeback. Perez led off with a single, followed by a double from CF Wes Schill to pick up his first hit of the season. Two batters later 2B Tony Renda got hit by a pitch, and both he and Schill came around to score on a bloop single to left center by 1B Shawn Pleffner.
The three runs in the top of the seventh drew the Doubledays within three, 11-8, but Williamsport extended its lead with one run in each the bottom of the seventh and bottom of the eighth to win by a final margin of five. Beginning with the fourth inning the Crosscutters put at least one run on the board in five consecutive innings, as they out hit the Doubledays for the game 18-11.
Hanson earned the win for Williamsport, allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits in three innings while striking out six. Smith took the loss for Auburn, as he started and gave up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings.
The Doubledays and Crosscutters will go at it again on Saturday night in game two of the three game series. The Doubledays will send RHP Taylor Jordan (0-0) to the mound for his second start of the year. He will square off against RHP Joshua Warner (1-0) for the Crosscutters. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
