LOWELL, MA --- John Wooten went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI as the Vermont Lake Monsters overcame five errors by its defense to beat the Lowell Spinners 8-7 in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at LeLecheur Park.

The Lake Monsters took an early 4-0 lead with a run in the first inning on a Wooten sacrifice fly, then three more runs in the third on a Wooten two-run single and a Jacob Tanis RBI single that scored Rhett Stafford with the 6,000th run in Vermont's 19-year history.

Lowell was able to tie the game in the bottom of the third with four unearned runs scoring with the help of three Vermont errors, but the Lake Monsters retook the lead in the fourth by scoring an unearned run of their own as Dayton Alexander scored from second base on a two-out throwing error. That lead lasted just an inning as the Spinners took the lead in the fifth on a run-scoring groundout and the go ahead run scoring on shortstop Wilfredo Solano's third error of the game.

Wooten was in the middle of the Lake Monsters rally in the seventh to take the lead as he doubled home Rhett Stafford with the tying run and then scored the go ahead run from second on a throwing error by second baseman Jason Thompson. Vermont added an insurance run in the ninth as Stafford walked, moved to third on Wooten's third hit and then scored on the back end of a double steal attempt. Lowell would get a two-out RBI single in the ninth, but Austin House recorded the final out for his first save of season.

Nate Eppley (1-0) tossed three hitless innings of relief with one walk and five strikeouts to pick the victory, while reliever Jadd Schmeltzer was charged with the two Vermont runs (one earned) in the seventh to take the loss. The five Lake Monster errors, the most by a Vermont team since August of 2009, led to five of the Spinners seven runs being unearned.

Stafford was 1-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored, while Alexander had two hits and Chris Bostick scored twice for Vermont (3-3). Matt Gedman was 3-for-5 with an RBI, while three other Spinners had three hits on the night as Lowell outhit Vermont 10-9.

The Lake Monsters and Spinners will wrap up the three-game series at Lowell on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:05 pm. Vermont returns home to historic Centennial Field on Monday night  against the Connecticut Tigers  to begin a six-game homestand and a stretch with 12 of 15 games at Centennial.
