State College Spikes News Release
*STATE COLLEGE, PA* - Trailing 7-1 going to the bottom of the ninth, the State College Spikes brought the tying run to the plate, but fell just short of completing the rally as they lost to the West Virginia Black Bears, 7-4, on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Despite the loss, State College (35-16) maintained a six-game lead in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division with Williamsport's loss to Hudson Valley.
*Elier Rodriguez*, *Danny Hudzina* and *Bladimil Franco* delivered three straight hits to start the final frame for the Spikes, and an error scored Rodriguez to trim the deficit to five. Hudzina then scored on a passed ball to make it 7-3.
Two batters later, *Yariel Gonzalez *drove in Franco with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4. *Vince Jackson *then stepped up with runners on first and second and two outs, but struck out to end the game.
State College scored its first run when Gonzalez doubled in *Tommy Edman *in the fifth. Edman reached base five times on the night, with three hits, including a double, and two walks.
West Virginia (23-28) jumped on the board in the first on *Kevin Krause*'s RBI single, with *Stephen Alamais *adding another in the second.
*Sandy Santos *then tripled in two runs in the third, and *Arden Pabst *tacked on another run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
The Black Bears finished their scoring in the eighth with a run-scoring fielder's choice from Krause and an *Albert Baur *single to plate another run.
State College starter *Steven Farinaro *(6-1) took his first loss of the year after yielding five runs on 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings. Farinaro, who was bidding to become the second Spikes pitcher to start a season 7-0 after *Kevin Herget *in 2013, also struck out one in the effort.
*Stephan Meyer *(2-4) started for West Virginia and earned the win after giving up one run on six hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings.
Alamais and Baur each collected three hits for the Black Bears.
