Game 51 Recap: Bullpen Clutch in 3-2 Victory

Gregory Soto earned his second straight win on the hill

Auburn, NY - The Connecticut Tigers (28-23) had to sweat out a 3-2 victory tonight against the Washington Nationals affiliate, the Auburn Doubledays.

The Tigers raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first with the benefit of an error from the Doubledays. After Pinero singled to left and moved up to second on a wild pitch, Joey Havrilak rolled a groundball through the legs of first basemen Ryan Ripken, the error allowed Pinero to score and the Tigers were on the board. After a Havrilak stolen base, his eighth of the year, Josh Lester drove in the run with an RBI single to right field.

The Tigers added another tally in the top of the third inning when Joey Havrilak again was able to reach via an error. Blaise Salter followed with his 30th RBI of the year, a single into left field to push the Tigers lead to 3-0.

The Doubledays crept back in the ballgame with a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth against Gregory Soto. The Tigers left-hander was solid against tonight, earning a quality start and picking up his second straight win of the year. Soto finished the night pitching six innings, yielding two runs on six hits, he did not walk a batter for the first time this season and struck out two.

The bullpen faced some anxious moments in the late innings but were able to secure the victory for the Tigers. In the eighth inning with the tying run at third and potential winning run at first, Mark Ecker escaped a tight scenario by striking out former college teammate, Nick Banks. Getting Tres Barrera to hit a weak pop up to first base and then striking out Ryan Ripken to keep the Tigers ahead, 3-2.

Bryan Garcia pitched the ninth inning and earned his first professional save, striking out Blake Perkins to seal the deal and give Connecticut the series-opener.

The Tigers look to punch their ticket to a series-win tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Falcon Park. Austin Sodders takes the mound for the Tigers.
