State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes' bats were held in check by Auburn Doubledays pitching on Tuesday night, as the Spikes were held to three hits in a 9-0 defeat at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Michaelangel Trinidad was the lone State College (1-4) player with an extra-base hit, doubling to right-center field in the eighth inning for his first two-bagger in a Spikes uniform. Derek Trent became the only Spike to notch hits in each of his first four games with a fourth-inning single. Wes Freeman added the other hit for State College.

Auburn (4-1) started the game with two runs in the first inning off Spikes starter Joely Rodriguez (0-1). The Doubledays would add runs in the second and third innings as well to stake themselves to a 4-0 lead before Rodriguez left the game.

After Vince Payne set down five of the first six batters he faced in relief of Rodriguez, including a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play, Auburn was able to get a baserunner on in the sixth inning, when Justin Miller was ruled to have been hit by a pitch. Following a double by Connor Rowe that scored Miller, Hendry Jimenez reached first by less than a stop on an infield single to plate Rowe. The Doubledays added one more run in the sixth inning, plus single runs in the eighth and ninth for the final margin of victory.

Rodriguez took the loss for the Spikes after allowing three earned runs among his four total. The Dominican southpaw also yielded eight hits while striking out two. Payne went 2 2/3 innings and ended up being charged with three runs, all of them earned, on two hits and a walk while striking out a team-high five batters. Justin Ennis pitched a scoreless inning-and-a-third in relief, allowing one hit and one walk. Ennis also picked up a strikeout.

Colin Bates (1-0) sparkled for Auburn, giving up only Trent's single over five innings of work. Bates, who worked against State College in 2010 with the Vermont Lake Monsters, added four strikeouts. Chad Jenkins and Manny Rodriguez preserved the shutout win for the Doubledays.

Wednesday, the Spikes and Doubledays face off in the final matchup of their three-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. contest will feature right-hander Nick Kingham (0-1) starting on the mound for State College. Kingham took the loss in the season opener at Williamsport in his first start of the season. The Pirates selected the Las Vegas, NV native in the fourth round of the 2010 MLB Draft.

Auburn will counter with left-hander Ryan Demmin (1-0). Demmin went five innings against Batavia in the season opener, earning the win after allowing a run on three hits and three walks while striking out four.
