Jamestown Jammers News Release

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Jamestown Jammers scored all their runs in the second inning Tuesday night as they held on to edge the Williamsport Crosscutters, 4-3, at Diethrick Park.

After jumping out to an early lead, the Jammers (3-2) held on as Williamsport (2-3) mounted a furious comeback attempt. The Crosscutters had single tallies in the sixth and seventh and threatened in the eighth, but the Jammers bullpen managed to hold on to keep the lead.

Marquise Cooper reached base in all three of his at bats with two walks and a single to ignite the Jamestown offense. Pedro Mendoza contributed two singles to be the only Jammer with multiple hits, while five other players all had one base knock. For the second night in a row, Williamsport jumped on the Jammer starter in the first inning thanks to a Jamestown error. Kyrell Hudson and Kelly Dugan both singled to start the game before Patrick Murray bounced one underneath the glove of third baseman Ryan Goetz to plate the first Williamsport run. Starting pitcher Matthew Neil would settle in to escape without further damage after a pop up and ground out.

The Jammers then struck for four runs to take the lead in the bottom of the second. Rand Smith and Jobduan Morales had back-to-back singles to begin the frame. Ryan McIntyre singled to right field to tie the game before Viosergy Rosa belted a RBI double to give the Jammers the lead. Mendoza would bounce one back through the middle to plate the third run. Cooper followed with a walk to load up the bases and chase Williamsport starter Greg Herbst.

Reliever Austin Wright would get Brent Keys to bounce into a run-scoring double play, and Yefri Perez to pop up to end the inning.

Neither team would threaten to score until the sixth inning. Patrick Murray and Aaron Altherr had a pair of doubles in the frame to cut the Jamestown advantage to two.

Williamsport added another run off Chris Squires when Kyrell Hudson belted a solo home run over the left field fence with two outs in the seventh inning to make the score 4-3.

After a Dugan single, Jamestown called on Kenneth Toves to prevent any further damage, and he got a ground out to slam the door on the Crosscutter threat. Williamsport's best opportunity to tie the game came in the eighth inning due to multiple Jamestown miscues. Patrick Murray hit a pop up on the infield that should have been caught but was untouched for a single. Then, Maikel Franco added a single of his own to put the tying run at second base with no outs. Aaron Altherr had two failed bunt attempts before Toves fanned him for the first out.

Toves then got Drew Hillman to ground into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but shortstop Yefri Perez dropped the throw from Mendoza to load up the bases.

However, the twin killing would come one batter later when Bob Stumpo bounced one to Mendoza at second base where he tagged the runner and threw to first to escape the jam.

Alfredo Buret would toss a perfect ninth to get the save for the Jammers. Charles Wier earned the win in relief of Matt Neil as he threw a perfect fourth inning in his professional debut.

Herbst took the loss for the 'Cutters as he allowed five hits and all four Jamestown runs in just over an inning of work. Relievers Wright, Hector Neris and Ryan Duke combined to shutdown the Jamestown offense. In eight innings of work, the trio allowed just three hits, no runs and struck out 10.

Dugan led the Williamsport offense with three singles, while Hudson had two hits, two runs and a RBI.

The Jammers will look for their first sweep of the season tonight as they try to close out the Crosscutters at 7:05 p.m.
