Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY - The Jammers kicked off the 2011 home schedule with a bang as they knocked off Williamsport, 7-1, at Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park Monday night. The bottom of the line-up delivered for Jamestown as the last three batters had ï¬Âve of the team's eight hits. Marquise Cooper paced the offense with a run, two singles and two RBI, and Pedro Mendoza chipped in two singles and two runs. Jobduan Morales had the team's only extra- base hit with a triple, and he scored two runs.
Williamsport jumped out to an early lead in the top of the ï¬Ârst inning as they capitalized on a pair of Jammer miscues. Cody Asche singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Patrick Murray then reached on a ï¬Âelding error before Maikel Franco singled in Asche.
After a slow start to the contest, Mendoza and Cooper ignited the Jamestown offense in the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back singles to start the frame. Brent Keys followed with a RBI ground out, and Yefri Perez contributed a sacriï¬Âce ï¬ây to give the Jammers the lead at 2-1.
Williamsport threatened to tie the game in the top of the fourth, but a spectacular play allowed the Jammers to keep the lead. Patrick Murray lead off the inning with a double and advanced to third with one out. Harold Martinez then hit a deep ï¬ây bay to left, and Murray tried to tag from third, but he was thrown out at the plate by Ryan McIntyre.
It was the lower half of the order that delivered again in the bottom of the fourth as the Jammers extended their lead. Morales walked with one out before Ryan McIntyre and Mendoza loaded up the bases with a pair of singles. Cooper then plated two runs with his second hit, while Keys added another RBI ground out to extend the lead to four.
The Jammers struck with two-out lightning in the bottom of the ï¬Âfth. Viosergy Rosa singled to left, and Morales delivered the team's fourth triple of the season on a ball hit to deep right ï¬Âeld. The Crosscutters bobbled the ball on the relay home, which allowed Morales to score on the play and cap the Jamestown scoring.
From there, the bullpen would take over as it allowed just two hits and one walk in ï¬Âve shutout innings. Blake Brewer fanned two in one inning of work to earn his ï¬Ârst win of the season, while Stephen Richards struck out three in two innings.
In his ï¬Ârst start since Tommy John surgery, Tom Peale allowed one unearned run and struck out four in four innings on the mound for the Jammers.
Cody Fick took the loss for the Crosscutters to fall to 0-1. He threw 2.2 innings and surrendered two earned runs. Aaron Altherr paced the Williamsport offense with two singles.
The Jammers moved back to .500 with the win, and the team will look for its ï¬Ârst winning streak of the season when they take on the Crosscutters at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday night.
