Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Niles, Ohio - Mahoning Valley used a pair of two-out hits and a trio of shutout pitching performances to beat the Batavia Muckdogs, 2-0, at Eastwood Field.
Kevin Fontanez doubled in Todd Hankins with two outs in the fifth inning to give the Scrappers a 1-0 lead. Bryson Myles singled in Tony Wolters with two outs in the eighth to give Mahoning Valley a two-run lead.
The scoring came after Batavia designated hitter Mike O'Neill was ruled to have left third base early on an apparent sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning, preventing a run from scoring and ending the inning.
Danny Jimenez and two relievers combined to shut out the Muckdogs. Jimenez threw 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball to start the game. Cody Allen followed and retired all 11 batters he faced, striking out six. He earned the win to improve to 1-0.
Bryce Stowell threw the final two innings, allowing one hit and one walk and striking out three batters. He picked up his first save of the season.
Mahoning Valley and Batavia conclude their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm at Eastwood Field.
