Aberdeen IronBirds Game Notes

Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds will attempt to snap a three-game losing streak tonight at MCU Park against the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets). After winning the season opener, the IronBirds dropped two straight to the Hudson Valley Renegades, and lost last night to the Cyclones, 5-4. Left-hander Aaron Wirsch will get the start as the IronBirds attempt to right the ship. Wirsch pitched in one game last season for Aberdeen, allowing one run in three innings to the Connecticut Tigers. He'll go up against right-hander Marco Camarena, who is also making his first start of the 2011 season.

Brooklyn Beat-Downs

The three-game losing streak the IronBirds are stuck in isn't the only losing streak they are a part of. With last night's loss, the IronBirds have now dropped eight straight games to the Cyclones. Their last win against Brooklyn came nearly a year ago, on June 26, 2010. Aberdeen has also lost six straight at MCU Park. The Last time the IronBirds won in Brooklyn was July 28, 2009.

Sawyer Breaks Out

After starting off the season hitless in his first 10 at bats, Wynston Sawyer broke out by drilling a solo home run to left field in the ninth inning of last night's 5-4 loss to Brooklyn. It was Sawyer's second career long ball. He hit one last season while playing with the Gulf Coast League Orioles.

Better than Your Average Joe

IronBirds DH/first baseman Joe Velleggia has mashed in his fist three starts for the IronBirds. The Baltimore-native currently leads the club in batting average, RBIs, hits, and slugging percentage. He's also tied for the team lead in home runs, with one, after hitting a monster shot to left-center field in last night's loss.

Cooney and Gamboa

The IronBirds bullpen has been bolstered by two arms from Double-A. Brandon Cooney and Eddie Gamboa have combined to throw four scoreless innings through the first two games of the season. Both pitchers made the trip to Brooklyn and could be available to pitch at some point in the series.
