State College Spikes News Release
University Park -- The State College Spikes lost on the field to the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday evening, by the score of 4-3 but they were victorious in the fight against breast cancer as the Spikes raised over $5,000 for the Mount Nittany Medical Center Breast Care Center during the team's second annual Paint the Park Pink. The Spikes wore special pink jerseys that were auctioned off throughout the evening, and fans were able to donate money to honor their loved ones who have been affected by the disease.
What a difference a night makes. On Tuesday evening the Spikes scored 12 runs on 14 hits, but on Wednesday evening the offense was missing early in the game. State College collected only two hits in the first five innings of the game, while the Spinners bats took advantage of a rare poor outing from Duke Welker (2-2) and jumped out to an early lead. After two scoreless innings, Lowell broke through in the third inning scoring a single unearned run on a RBI single from Rafael Cabreja.
Two innings later, the lead swelled to 3-0 before Welker departed for the evening. The second round draft pick from the University of Arkansas, allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits over five innings of work. Dionis Rodriguez came out of the bullpen and allowed one run over his 1.2 innings of work and the Spinners had a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
In that inning, the Spikes started to trim away at the deficit. Brian Friday started the rally with a double and moved to third on a Matt Cavagnaro single. Justin Byler then got the Spikes on the board with and RBI groundout before Andrew Walker drove home the second run with an RBI double that made the score 4-2. The Spikes continued their comeback in the seventh scoring once on a Smelin Perez RBI single and later had runners on second and third with only one out, but Brian Friday and Matt Cavagnaro were unable to get the tying run across the plate.
The combination of Scott Lonegran and Felix Ventura pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning and the Spikes came up short and fell by the score of 4-3.
The Spikes will close out their home stand and their three game series with the Lowell Spinners tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. After tomorrow's affair, the Spikes will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday, August 17th to take on the Williamsport Crosscutters. Great seats are still available for all of the remaining Spikes games and they can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-Spikes, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com or in person at the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
