-SPIKES PLAY LAST GAME: The State College Spikes play their final game of the 2009 season against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tonight at Eastwood Field. The Spikes finish their season against the 2009 Pinckney Division champions, who will start the playoffs Tuesday at Brooklyn. The last time the Spikes finished the season with the Scrappers was in 2007, when State College swept a three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Mahoning Valley leads the season series, 5-4, and the all-time series, 21-18.
-LAST GAME: State College could produce just three hits in a 3-0 loss to Mahoning Valley at Eastwood Field last night. Singles by Brock Holt, David Rubinstein and Miguel Mendez were the extent of the Spikes' offense. The Scrappers scored a run in the first inning to take the lead, then scored two in the seventh on a wild pitch and a squeeze bunt with two outs. The win gave the Scrappers their franchise high for victories.
-INMAN DRAWS LAST START FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Jeff Inman gets the season's final start for State College, his second as a professional. The Pirates' 12th-round draft pick this year, Inman made his first start on Tuesday in Batavia, pitching two shutout innings and retiring the first five hitters he faced. Inman did allow two hits, but ended the outing unscathed otherwise.
-GUILMET GETS START FOR SCRAPPERS: Mahoning Valley sends right-hander Preston Guilmet to the hill tonight. Guilmet mades his 15th start of the season and thirdd of the year against the Spikes tonight. The Roseville, CA native has allowed two earned run in 8-2/3 innings in his previous two starts against the Spikes.
-TRIO OF SPIKES EARN YEAR-END HONORS: In a ceremony prior to Sunday's home finale, three State College Spikes were honored with the team's annual year-end awards. Infielder Brock Holt was named the Spikes' team MVP for the 2009 season, while right-hander Kyle McPherson earned the Spikes Pitcher of the Year award, and outfielder David Rubinstein netted the inagural Leadership Award, presented by the Spikes Booster Club. --
