Spikes Blast Scrappers In Season Finale
September 6, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
NILES, OH-Powered by a trifecta of home runs, including a homecoming blast by Justin Byler, the State College Spikes routed the 2009 Pinckney Division champion Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 14-4, in their season finale at Eastwood Field on Sunday evening.
Byler's three-run homer came in the eighth inning, and thrilled a crowd that included family members in what could be his final at-bat for State College (38-38). Byler grew up in nearby Warren, OH.
The crowning home run came after two-run shots by Evan Chambers in the first inning and Aaron Baker in the fifth. Byler's homer was also a part of a six-run eighth inning that included eight consecutive hits with two outs.
Three different Spikes had three-hit games in the finale, including Baker, David Rubinstein and Brock Holt. State College's three home runs were a season high for a single game. The Spikes' 17 hits also tied a season high, while the 14 runs topped the previous high mark for the year of 12 set on Thursday against Williamsport.
State College ended the season with a record of .500 or better for the first time as a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, and their best record since the inaugural season of 2006.
Jason Erickson (4-2) earned the win for the Spikes with four innings of three-run relief, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out two. Erickson followed Jeff Inman, who started and went two scoreless innings. Inman, the Pirates' 12th-round draft pick in 2009, has now started his professional career with four straight scoreless innings.
Mahoning Valley (49-27) starter Preston Guilmet took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and a walk in 1-2/3 innings of work. Guilmet also struck out two in the effort. The Scrappers finished the game with starting right fielder Tim Palincsar on the mound, who allowed one unearned run on a hit and a walk in the ninth inning.
