Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

The Williamsport Crosscutters finished their 2009 campaign in grand fashion on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a 7-6 win over the Auburn Doubledays.

The Cutters fell behind in the first inning when Auburn scored three runs off Williamsport starter Joshua Zeid (8-5, 2.94). The first three Doubledays batters hit singles loading the bases with nobody out. Zeid allowed the first run to score when he released a wild pitch that skipped away from C David Doss. With two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd Zeid was not able to get out of the jam allowing CF Markus Brisker to hit a 2-run single to right increasing the lead to 3-0.

Williamsport scored a run in the bottom half of the first inning. CF Jiwan James led off the game with a fly ball that went over the head of the auburn centerfielder and to the wall for a triple. With one out in the inning, DH Leandro Castro hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring James and cutting the lead to 3-1.

The Crosscutters tied the game in the bottom half of the 2nd as they were able to plate two runs. With two outs C David Doss started the rally by getting hit by a pitch. Doss went to second on LF Carl Uhl's single to center. Both runners moved up a base on an Auburn wild pitch, and James singled home Doss with the second run of the game. James was then picked off of first base and Uhl used some heads up base running to slide into home safely before James was tagged out in a run down.

Auburn regained the lead in the top of the 3rd inning when C Yan Gomes hit a RBI single scoring 2B Ryan Schimpf.

In the bottom half of the 5th inning, the Cutters took the lead away from the Doubledays as they plated four runs in the inning to take the lead at 7-4. Uhl led off with a walk, James singled, and RF Zach Collier walked to load up the bases for Castro. Castro made the best of his at-bat as he blasted a grand slam to left centerfield giving him five RBIs on the day. It was Castro's 7th home run of the season tying him with 3B Anthony Hewitt for the most home runs on the team.

Auburn attempted to make a comeback in the top of the 7th however their bid at the comeback ended one run short as they were only able to score two runs to cut the lead to 7-6. With a runner on third base and one out Cutters relief pitcher Mike Bolsenbroek (0-0, 1.93) struck out Brisker and induced pinch hitter Lance Durham into an inning ending ground out to first baseman Stephen Batts.

Bolsenbroek finished the last two inning in picking up his first save in a Williamsport Crosscutters uniform.

Cutters starting pitcher Joshua Zeid picked up his 8th win of the season, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out eight Doubledays.

Jiwan James was an impressive 4 for 5 in his final game of the 2009 season. Castro finished 1 for 3 with his grand slam and 5 RBIs and Anthony Hewitt went out on a solid note, going 2 for 4 with a double and triple.

The Crosscutters finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 42-34, their most wins since 2005.
