STATEN ISLAND, NY --- The Vermont Lake Monsters wrapped up the 2009 season with an 34-41 record, including 20-18 on the road, with an 11-2 victory over the Staten Island Yankees on Sunday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

After the Yankees scored in the bottom of the first inning, the Lake Monsters scored two runs in the second and one in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Hector Rabago hit a solo homer for Staten Island in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Vermont scored four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings to clinch the victory.

Sean Nicol had a two-run double followed by back-to-back RBI singles from J.P. Ramirez and Destin Hood for the four sixth-inning runs, while Ramirez had a two-run double followed by a Justin Bloxom RBI double and Jack Walker RBI single in the four-run eighth.

Ramirez's two-run double in the eighth inning was his 18th of the season, tying him with three former Lake Monster players (Bill Rhinehart, Chad Chop and Jon Saffer) for third-place on the Vermont single-season doubles list. Ramirez also finished tied for 6th in games played (72), 3rd in at bats (295), 7th in triples (6) and 8th in total bases (120).

Ramirez was 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI on Sunday, while Sandy Leon and J.J. Sferra both added two hits. Leon finished the season hitting .386 (22-for-57) over his last 15 games, while Sferra went 13-for-26 (.500) in his final seven games. The 12 hits on Sunday lifted the Lake Monsters team batting average to .239, the highest average of the season for Vermont.

Starter Kyle Morrison (3-4), who pitched collegiately at nearby Wagner College in Staten Island, allowed two runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings for the victory. Reliever Steven Stewart pitched a scoreless eighth inning in his 20th appearance of the season and, combined with his 20 outings in 2008 with the Lake Monsters, tied Wes Chisnall (1999-2001) for the most games pitched (40) all-time for Vermont.

Evan Bronson pitched the ninth for the Lake Monsters, allowing a one-out walk before a game and season-ending double play for a scoreless frame. Bronson ended the season 3-0 with four saves and a 0.55 ERA in 20 apperances, allowing seven runs (three earned) on 28 hits with just three walks and 38 strikeouts over 49 1/3 innings.

Staten Island (47-29), who clinched the McNamara Division title on Saturday, will join the Stedler Division champion Lowell Spinners, the Pinckney Division champion Mahoning Valley Scrappers and wild card winner Brooklyn Cyclones in the New York-Penn League playoffs this upcoming week.
