'Birds Close Out With A Shut Out

(ABERDEEN, MD) - A pair of homeruns got the 'Birds off to an early lead as they coasted to a 3-0 victory over Tri-City as they end the season on a positive note.

The IronBirds (29-44) hosted the Tri-City Valley Cats (27-47) in their season finale on Fan Appreciation Day at Ripken Stadium.

Tyler Sexton took the mound for the IronBirds in this afternoon's season finale. Sexton is 2-7 with a 3.67 ERA over fourteen games including twelve starts. Sexton just faced the Valley Cats in Tri-City on September 1st where went 4.0 innings, allowing only one hit but did not receive a decision in the game. Sexton went 6.0 innings, allowed five hits but no runs, while striking out four and walking just one and picking up his fourth victory.

The 'Birds wasted no time in the contest, jumping out to an early lead via a 2-run homer by Tyler Townsend, his fourth on the season, in the first inning. The 'Birds led the Valley Cats 2-0 after the blast.

Jason Rook contributed in the third inning with a solo shot to right field, his second of the season, boosting the 'Birds lead to 3-0.

That was all the 'Birds needed after jumping out to an early lead almost instantly and ending the season with a victory as they end a 4-game skid.

Tri-City's starter, Brandt Walker, lasted 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits along with five strikeouts and one walk. Walker received his seventh loss on the season.

The IronBirds close out the season with a 30-44 record, fourth in the New York-Penn League McNamara division.
