Spikes Fall to Scrappers, 2-1, After Late Comeback

NILES, OH - The State College Spikes got a strong start from Nick Kingham and held a one-run lead going into the eighth inning on Sunday Night at Eastwood Field., but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers came back and took the win, 2-1, on a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning.

Kingham, the Pirates' fourth-round draft pick, held Mahoning Valley (8-3) off the board in five innings of work. The right-hander gave up four hits and four walks, but also struck out four Scrappers batters in his second straight five-inning outing.

State College (2-9) also staked Kingham to a lead in the fifth inning when Matt Skirving led off with a double and came in to score on a throwing error by Mahoning Valley shortstop Tony Wolters. Skirving notched a pair of doubles for the Spikes, becoming the second State College player with multiple extra-base hits in a game.

The Scrappers came back to tie the game in the eighth inning, however, when Jordan Smith doubled and scored on Jerryd Sabourin's two-out RBI single off Spikes reliever Fraylin Campos (1-1). Campos then hit Wolters with a pitch to start off the ninth inning, and after walk and a bunt single, issued a free pass on four pitches to Smith to end the game.

Samuel Gonzalez went 2-for-4 for State College to increase his average to .476 on the year, and Wes Freeman added a double in the Spikes' offensive cause.

Campos took the loss after allowing his first two runs of the season on three hits and three walks. Kevin Kleis pitched two scoreless innings of relief for State College.

Kyle Petter (2-0) earned the win for Mahoning Valley after pitching the final 1 1/3 innings. The left-hander yielded one walk and struck out two batters.

The teams combined for 27 runners left on base in the game, with 15 for the Scrappers and 12 for the Spikes.

Tuesday, the Spikes and Scrappers finish off their three-game series at Eastwood Field in a 7:05 p.m. matchup. Right-hander Bryce Weidman (1-1) will get the nod on the hill for his third appearance and first start of the year for State College. Mahoning Valley will send right-hander Harold Guerrero (1-1) to the mound.

The Spikes will return home to Medlar Field on Lubrano Park on Wednesday, June 29 to start a five-game homestand with three more games against the Scrappers. Fans can start off the homestand with half-price Outfield Bleacher seats, plus half-price domestic draft beers from 6-8 p.m. and half-price medium sodas all game long on Half-Price Wednesday, presented by BIG Froggy 101.

It will also be Health Care Appreciation Night as the Spikes pay tribute to health care professionals, as well as a Centre County United Way Partner Agency Series night spotlighting the partner agencies of the Centre County United Way.
