Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds used two runs in the bottom of the eighth on three consecutive singles to end their nine-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the second place Brooklyn Cyclones. The win was the first for the IronBirds since Opening Day and the first against the Cyclones since June 26, 2010.
The IronBirds took an early lead in the bottom of the second. Connor Narron and Riley Hornback walked, and with two outs Dudley Leonora roped an RBI double that plated Narron, giving the IronBirds a quick 1-0 lead.
Aberdeen extended their lead in the bottom of the third. Chris Clinton singled and Joe Velleggia hit a two out RBI single that scored Clinton and the home team took a 2-0 lead.
Brooklyn touched up Aberdeen starter Parker Bridwell in the very next inning. Brandon Brown led off with a single, and then stole second. Bridwell got two quick outs before Brown scored on a Brian Harrison RBI single making it 2-1 in favor of Aberdeen.
Brooklyn struck again in the seventh and eighth innings. Chase Greene hit a one out solo home run to left to tie the ballgame. Then in the eighth Javier Rodriguez led off with a double. After IronBird pitcher Trent Howard struck out back-to-back Cyclones, Charley Thurber hit an RBI double that scored Rodriguez and gave Brooklyn a 4-3 lead.
That's when the IronBirds began to go to work. After four innings of one-hit baseball, the IronBirds had three straight singles and an error, all with two outs. Clinton hit a single and got aboard. Mychal Givens got aboard after hitting a groundball deep in the hole at shortstop. Clinton advanced to third and Givens reached first base. Velleggia hit a ball to right field that Thurber dropped and allowed Clinton to score. Givens made his way to third, the Cyclone second baseman Brown dropped the ball and Givens came in to score. After all the confusion, the IronBirds took the lead 4-3.
Brooklyn went down in order in the top of the ninth and Steve Mazur earned his first save of the year.
Bridwell went five innings, allowing three hits, one run (earned), walking three and striking out five. Howard, making his professional debut, gets the win. He pitched the eighth inning, allowing two hits, one run (earned) and struck out three. For the Cyclones, Aldama went five innings and allowed three hits, two runs (both earned), three walks, and struck out five. Jeremy Gould blew his first save and took the loss, falling to 0-1.
The rubber match of this three game set takes place tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Jacob Cowan (0-1, 3.60) will get the start for Aberdeen, while Carlos Vasquez (0-2, 2.89) will go for Brooklyn.
