State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Vincent Jackson broke the State College Spikes into the hit column in the seventh inning, but the Spikes could do no more damage in taking a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Hudson Valley Renegades on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Jackson's single up the middle led off the seventh, but Jose Alonzo and Travis Ott (1-0) combined to hold State College (2-2) to just three baserunners on the night to give Hudson Valley (2-2) the win. Two walks, one drawn by Jeremy Martinez and another by Mick Fennell, were the only additional offense for the Spikes.
The Renegades took the lead on Joseph Astacio's bases-loaded, two-out, two-run single in the second. In the fifth, Hudson Valley tacked on three more runs. Kewby Meyer's sacrifice fly was followed by a double from Penn State product Jim Haley and a wild pitch to score a trio for the Renegades.
Haley and Astacio each produced three hits in the game. Angel Perez also doubled twice for the Renegades.
State College starter Ronnie Williams (0-1) took the loss. The 2014 second-round draft choice allowed all five Hudson Valley runs on eight hits and four hit batsmen. Williams struck out four in the effort.
Two Spikes making their first appearance of the season finished out the game. Lefty Bob Wheatley yielded three hits while striking out one over two scoreless innings. Righty Max Almonte completed the night with a pair of shutout frames in which he gave up two hits while striking out one batter.
Ott earned the win for the Renegades, finishing the game with five innings of one-hit ball. The southpaw also gave up one walk and struck out one. Alonzo issued a single walk over four innings.
The Spikes and Renegades will meet in the rubber match of their three-game series on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Bryan Dobzanski making his first start of the season for State College. Right-hander Spencer Moran will get the ball for Hudson Valley.
