Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - Connecticut scored three runs in the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie as Joey Havrilak lined a two-run triple to right and scored on a sacrifice fly as the Tigers beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 5-3 in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.
Havrilak, who had a three-run homer in the 13th inning of Connecticut's 3-1 victory over Vermont on Sunday, also singled in the ninth inning with the Tigers leading 4-3 to set up an insurance run on a Blaise Salter RBI groundout off Vermont reliever Dalton Sawyer, who allowed the one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in his pro debut after being selected by Oakland in the ninth round of the 2016 draft out of the University of Minnesota.
Earlier in the game, Vermont had tied the score 1-1 in the fourth inning on an Eric Marinez two-out RBI double off the leftfield wall to score Carson Blair, but Jhonny Rodriguez was gunned down at the plate to end the inning and keep the score tied. After the Tigers three-run fifth, Vermont got single runs in the fifth on a Luis Barrera RBI infield single and in the sixth on Miguel Mercedes first home run of the season to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Lake Monsters starter Kevin Johnson (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss, while Will Gilbert retired all four batters he faced (two by strikeout), in his pro debut after being taken in the eighth round of the recent draft by the A's out of North Carolina State. Carson Blair had two hits and a double for Vermont (0-4), which has lost its first four games of the season for the fourth time in team history and first time since 2005.
Connecticut reliever Daniel Gonzalez (1-0) allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings to earn the win, while Eduardo Jimenez had two strikeouts in a perfect ninth for his first save as the Tigers won their third straight game to improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Lake Monsters will look for their first win of the season on Tuesday night at 7:05 pm as they host Connecticut in the final game of the three-game series. The first 500 fans will receive a free LED Light Blub courtesy of the Burlington Electric Department & Gas Systems, while kids will be able to run the bases post-game.
