Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - A one-hit performance by two pitchers and the continuation of a couple of hot streaks at the plate helped Hudson Valley defeat State College 5-0 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Monday night.
The Renegades got on the board with two runs in the second. A single by third baseman Jim Haley and two hit batsmen loaded the bases with two outs when shortstop Joseph Astacio grounded a two-run single to center to give his team a 2-0 lead. The RBI were Astacio's first two of the season.
Hudson Valley took control of the game with a three-run fifth. After a single by leftfielder Garrett Whitley, Nathaniel Lowe became the fourth Renegade batter to be hit by a pitch, which put runners at first and second. Hot-hitting rightfielder Angel Perez then slapped a double down the leftfield line to score Whitley and move Lowe to third. The Renegades first baseman came home on a sac fly by designated hitter Kewby Meyer while Perez moved up to third. State College starter Ronnie Williams then uncorked a wild pitch to score Angel and give the Renegades a commanding 5-0 lead.
After a difficult night on Sunday, Hudson Valley pitchers were outstanding on Monday as they carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Starter Jose Alonzo started with four scoreless innings while allowing one walk. However, his pitch count forced him from the game, which allowed Travis Ott (1-0) to pick up the win in relief. The Saginaw Valley, PA native tossed five shutout innings while allowing State College's lone hit. He also recorded the only strikeout of the game for the Renegades.
Williams (0-1) took the loss for the Spikes after surrendering five earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work. He also hit four batters, but did not surrender a walk.
One night after registering a season-high 10 hits, Hudson Valley upped that number with 13 base knocks. Astacio and Haley led the way with three hits apiece. Astacio is now 7-12 on the season and also stole his third base of the season. Angel Perez continued his torrid stretch with two hits including a double and RBI. He is 9-18 on the season.
State College only had five baserunners for the game and only one made it past first base. Leftfielder Vincent Jackson's leadoff single in the seventh prevented Hudson Valley from a no-hitter.
The Renegades and Spikes will wrap up their three-game set with a 7:05 start tomorrow in the rubber game of the series. Right-hander Garrett Fulenchek (0-1) will go for the Renegads against State College righty Bryan Dobzanski. Hudson Valley returns home on Wednesday to take on Lowell in the first of a three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
